A man and a woman are facing misdemeanor charges after they left theirtwo children unattended in a filthy Austin apartment where their4-month-old son was found dead, police said.

Chicago police are conducting a death investigation in the caseafter Kassidy Kennedy was found unresponsive Friday in the home on the400 block of South Laramie Avenue, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak.

Keith Kennedy, 21, and Diamond Redwood, 19, are charged with childendangerment and reckless conduct due to the "nature of the home whichwas in complete disarray," Lesniak said.

Charges could be upgraded toinclude felony charges pending an autopsy of the infant which is scheduled for today, said Lesniak.

Department of Children and Family Services has opened aninvestigation into the case and removed a second child from the home, a 3-year-old girl, and placed her with family members, said Jimmie Whitelow, a DCFS spokesman.

Redwood came home from work at 2:20 p.m. Friday and found the baby unresponsive on a bed, Lesniak said. She told police that Kennedy wassupposed to have been taking care of the children but he was not home when she arrived.

Redwood also told police that when she left for workshe left the children in the father's care but when she returned home there were no adults in the apartment.

Police were called to assist Chicago Fire Department paramedics who had responded, said Lesniak.

Police said the apartment was strewn with clothes and garbage "everywhere,'' Lesniak said

Four-month-old Kassidy Kennedy was found unresponsive inside an
apartment in the 400 block of South Laramie Friday afternoon and was
pronounced dead at the scene. Police
say his parents had left him unattended inside the apartment. Diamond
Redwood and Keith Kennedy each face misdemeanor charges of child
endangerment and reckless conduct charges. An autopsy was expected to be performed Saturday afternoon.

The parents of a 4-month-old West Side boy have been charged in connection with his death.

Child welfare workers are investigating, alongside police, in the death of Kassidy Kennedy.

Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak said that
19-year-old Diamond Redmond told investigators that she left Kassidy in
the care of his father, 21-year-old Keith Kennedy, when she left their
apartment on the 400 block of South Laramie Avenue early Friday to go
to work.

Redmond told police that when she returned Friday afternoon, she found
Kennedy gone and Kassidy unresponsive in his crib, and said she
immediately called 911.

Paramedics were unable to revive the child. Lesniak said that the
paramedics found the apartment in a state of disarray, strewn with
garbage, other debris and clothing.

Both parents face misdemeanor charges of endangering the child and reckless conduct.

An autopsy conducted on the child Saturday was inconclusive, "pending
further studies," said a spokesman for the Cook County Medical
Examiner's office.

Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) spokesman Jimmie
Whitelow told WBBM that its investigators are investigating allegations
of both abuse and neglect in Kassidy's death, although the department
had no prior contact with the family.

Another child was in the home. Whitelow said the child has been placed by DCFS in the care of relatives.

No court information was immediately available.
