CAMERON FENTON - 19 months - Homewood AL / New York State
Police now believe Carlton Fenton, the father who abducted his 19 month old son yesterday from an Ihop in Homewood, is headed back to New York. US Marshals and Highway Patrol are on the look out for a black Tahoe with the New York license plate EJU 1337.
The Jefferson County DA’s office has also signed a Felony warrant on Carlton Fenton for the abduction.
The
parents of the missing child were in the midst of a custody battle at
the time of the abduction, and while they each had joint custody,
investigator James Evans says what the father did was illegal.
“Joint
custody does not mean that the other party can just take the child. Who
ever is the custodial parent has actually has the primary custody
rights to the child. To just take a child from a parent with out any
type of for warned notice or cooperation is against the law,” says
Evans.
No amber alert has been issued in this case because they don’t believe the child is in imminent danger.
Saturday Information:
3:30 Saturday afternoon, 19-month old Cameron Fenton was abducted from the I-Hop restaurant located on Lakeshore Parkway by his father, 25-year old Carlton Fenton, of New York.
“As
the mother was bagging up left over food from their dinning he left
with the child out of the business took time out to slash one of the
mother’s front tires and fled the area,” says Homewood Investigator
James Evans.
Before fleeing the scene, Carlton Fenton left the mother a note on an Ihop napkin.
“The
father stated that he wanted to have the child with him. He did not
want the child to grow up not knowing his dad and that he would take
care of the child. Since she is already pregnant at this time he felt
this was a good time for him to take the child. That he would give the
child the best of care and he ended it by saying this may be a stupid
thing for him to do but he felt he had to,” says Evans.
19
month old Cameron is described as a black, male toddler, wearing
cornrows, a blue Nike short set, and Winnie the Pooh shoes.
The father Carlton Fenton is described as a black, balding male, with a
tattoo of a lion on his left bicep. He was last seen wearing an orange
shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes. He is believed to be driving
a black Tahoe New York license plate EJU1337. Fenton is believed to have help in this abduction.
If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of the child please call Homewood Police at 877-8637.

Re: CAMERON FENTON - 19 months - Homewood AL / New York State
U.S. marshals and Homewood police are searching for a 19-month-old boy
who authorities said was abducted Saturday and taken out of state by
his biological father.
The
child, Cameron Fenton, and his father, Carlton Fenton, 33, are believed
headed to New York state, a police dispatcher said. The Jefferson
County District Attorney's Office today issued a felony arrest warrant
for Fenton on custodial interference, according to a statement issued
by the Homewood Police Department. Police said Fenton, of New York
City, was at the IHOP restaurant at the Wildwood Shopping Center
Saturday afternoon with Cameron and the child's mother, Monique
McMillian. When the mother returned from the restroom, the child and
his father were gone, and tires on the mother's car were slashed,
authorities said. Police said they went to every business at the
shopping center and locked down the Wal-Mart to search for the child.
Later, Fenton contacted Homewood police and faxed the child's birth
certificate and other information from a Hoover copying shop,
authorities said. Cameron, who answers to his name, was wearing a blue
Nike shorts and shirt set and Winnie the Pooh shoes, police said. His
hair is in cornrows. Fenton is described as black, 5 feet, 9 inches
tall and weighs 180 pounds, police said. He is bald and was wearing an
orange shirt. He may be driving a 2002 Chevy Tahoe with New York
license plate EJU1337, police said. Anyone with information can call Homewood police at 332-6200, extension 0.

Re: CAMERON FENTON - 19 months - Homewood AL / New York State
A hearing has been set for Tuesday in Jefferson County Family Court
to determine who has rightful custody of a 19-month-old child who was
reported abducted from Homewood Saturday and found safe in New York
City today, Homewood police said this afternoon.
The 19-month-old boy's mother, Monique McMillian of Birmingham, has
custody of the child, said Homewood police Det. James Evans.
However, someone faxed Homewood police a temporary court order from New
York City, issued in December 2008, that stated the father, Carlton
Fenton, is the full custodian of the boy, named Cameron Fenton, Evans
said. The 2008 court order was pending until another hearing that was
supposed to take place in early 2009 but never did, Evans said.
Tuesday's hearing is designed to help clarify the validity of the papers faxed to Homewood police, Evans said.
At a press conference today, McMillian said she had picked up her son's
father at the Birmingham International Airport shortly after noon
Saturday so he could visit with her and their son. After eating a meal
together at the IHOP restaurant in Homewood, McMillian said the boy and
his father wandered away while she gathered the leftovers. She then
didn't see them anywhere and found her tires slashed outside, she said.
Cameron Fenton was found safe today at Carlton's Fenton's home in the
Harlem part of New York City and taken into custody of the New York
City Department of Human Resources, Evans said. His father was arrested
because of the warrant for his arrest in Homewood on a charge of
interfering with custody, Evans said.
McMillian said she was happy her son was found safe and wants his
father to get help. "I don't think he thinks he's done anything wrong
because he is his biological father," McMillian said.
McMillian's mother, Kim McGraw, said Fenton's actions were an effort to spend more time with his son.
Evans said police believe that a third party picked up Fenton and
his son from the IHOP Saturday and that Fenton did not really fly into
Birmingham Saturday but was dropped off there by a third party. They
have not yet identified that third party, Evans said.
