A baby died 11 days before her first birthday at Carolinas Medical Center after she was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with bruises and internal injuries.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast, who will examine the girl on Tuesday, identified her as 11-month-old Xymerra Evans.

Chester County sheriff's deputies said the baby's mother drove her to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill on Friday afternoon. Doctors there transferred her to CMC, where it was discovered she had bruises on her chest and back.

The baby's grandmother, Joann Stroud, was at the hospital Saturday trying to see her, but wasn't allowed to her bedside.

"They wouldn't tell us nothing," Stroud said.

She said her son, the baby's father, was very upset.

"He was crying the whole time he was there. As he was trying to talk to the family, he was crying," she said.

Stroud lives with her son on Greene Street in Richburg. That's where the child's mother told detectives that the baby was staying at the time.

Stroud told Eyewitness News she had never seen the little girl until just two months ago, and only found out this summer that her son had another child.

Major Bill Murphy with the Chester County Sheriff's Office said investigators can't say much about the case yet.

"We're waiting on the autopsy results before we know where we're going to go with this," he said.

Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker said several agencies could have a hand in investigating the girl's death because she spent the night in Chester County before being taken to the hospital, but the child's mother is from Chesterfield County, according to family members.

"We're not even sure yet who's going to investigate this," Tinker said. "I just don't have any information right now.

"Officials in York County will do an autopsy Tuesday morning.

Stroud has a large family and said she can't believe anyone close to her would intentionally hurt a child.

"I have 17 grandchildren altogether, and I don't have a grandchild nowhere with a bruise on them, physical or in no kind of way," she said.

S.C. Baby Who Died Of Trauma Showed Signs Of Sexual Assault

Posted: 3:44 pm EDT September 8, 2009
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Investigators said an 11-month-old Chester County girl who died at Carolinas Medical Center over the weekend had been sexually assaulted.

An autopsy was done Tuesday morning on Xymerra Evans.

On Friday, the girl's mother drove her to a Rock Hill hospital. The baby had bruises to her head, chest and back, and showed signs of sexual assault, according to a Rock Hill police report.

Evans had stayed with her father in Richburg the previous night.

The coroner is not releasing any information from the autopsy until several test results are known.

No one has been charged in the girl’s death.

Police: Baby was sexually abused before she died: 11-month-old was bleeding internally, PMC nurse said
By Matt Garfield The Herald, Rock Hill, S.C.

Sep. 9--An 11-month-old girl who died over the weekend showed signs of a recent sexual assault, a nurse who treated her at the hospital told investigators.

The girl suffered injuries to her head and body, including a bruise across the torso that appeared to be a handprint, according to police reports.

Now, authorities from Chester and Chesterfield have joined an investigation that involves three counties and stops at hospitals in Rock Hill and Charlotte.
No arrests have been made, Maj. Bill Murphy of the Chester County Sheriff's Office said.

The baby was taken Friday to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill and sent to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she died less than three days later.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast identified the girl as Xymerra Evans.

Interviews with the mother helped investigators piece together the baby's final hours.

The night before she was taken to the hospital, the baby stayed at the Richburg home of her 23-year-old father, according to reports filed by Rock Hill Police. It was the first time the father had kept the baby for more than a few hours, the mother told police.

When the mother picked the girl up, she said the child was acting "strange" and had a "funny look" in her eyes, reports stated. On her way home to Rock Hill, the mother pulled into the parking lot of a business and called paramedics.

Police and officials from the state Department of Social Services came to the hospital at the request of a nurse who treated the child.

The nurse told officers that she had discovered signs of sexual abuse, including bruises and internal bleeding.

The 21-year-old mother said the baby on Wednesday had fallen off the bed during a visit to the home of the mother's parents in Chesterfield, reports show. But the girl's injuries were not consistent with falling from a bed, the nurse told police.

The baby was taken to CMC in Charlotte for treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit. She died late Sunday or early Monday, Gast said.
Reached Monday, the mother declined to comment.

An autopsy Monday morning gave answers as to when the girl was injured, but Gast would not release any findings, including cause of death.

She cited the ongoing investigation.

Gast said it would take several weeks for pathology tests to be completed.

Murphy said investigators are sorting through the sequence of events to figure out which agency should be in charge.

He said it was unclear how long that would take.

"We've got some jurisdictional issues that we've got to resolve," he said.

"I don't want to comment on somebody else's case if it's not mine."
