ANSONIA - A 26-year-old man has been charged in the death of his 3-month-old baby, police said.

Rodney Lee Brown faces one count of risk of injury to a minor and is in custody with bail set at $500,000. Police said additional charged could be filed as the investigation proceeds.

Ansonia police were dispatched around 9:50 p.m. to a home on Jewett Street after receiving a 911 call involving a 3-month-old child.

Responding officers provided medical assistance. The child was then taken to Griffin Hospital and was pronounced dead.

DERBY (AP) -- A Connecticut man has been sentenced to one year in prison in connection with the death of his 3-month-old daughter last year.

The New Haven Register reports that 27-year-old Rodney Lee Brown of Ansonia was sentenced Thursday in Derby Superior Court on charges of risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment.

The medical examiner's office wasn't able to determine whether Alayziah Brown's death in September 2009 was a homicide or accident, but its report said bed-sharing with an adult may have been a factor in what it called a "sudden unexplained infant death."

The girl's mother says she came home that day and found Brown sleeping, with part of him on the girl's face.

Brown pleaded no contest to the charges and denied that he fell asleep on top of the girl.

Before he was sentenced Thursday to serve a year in prison in connection with the death of his infant daughter, Rodney Lee Brown said he never got the chance to mourn his little girl.

Wearing a camouflage jacket as he stood before Judge Burton Kaplan in Superior Court in Derby, Brown said he misses his daughter, Alayziah Brown. The 3-month-old died while in his care in September 2009 in Ansonia.

“I never got a chance to mourn my daughter. Couldn’t even go to her funeral. ... Alayziah was also my daughter as well as Kristi’s,” Brown said, referring to the girl’s mother, Kristi FitzGerald.

Brown was hospitalized and then jailed after the child’s death. He was released after his bail was lowered in January.

Kaplan sentenced Brown, 27, to seven years’ in prison, suspended after one, and four years probation. Brown was charged Sept. 11, 2009, with risk of injury to a minor
