A South Carolina woman has been arrested after a 5-month boy in her care died. Multiple
media outlets reported Wednesday that 43-year-old Evelyn Deneice Petty
of Landrum is charged with homicide by child abuse. The charge carries
a sentence of 20 years to life in prison for a conviction. A
police report shows Petty told authorities she put the boy to bed with
his sister around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and tried CPR after finding him
unresponsive around 7 a.m. An autopsy determined that the
baby's death was suspicious. Authorities are awaiting the results of a
toxicology report, but they think the baby was shaken. Petty was being held Wednesday at the Spartanburg County jail. It's unclear if she has an attorney.

Landrum woman admits to causing death of infant
Published: Thursday, June 23, 2011
A Landrum woman was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday after she admitted to causing the death of a 5-month-old boy.
Evelyn D. Petty, 45, pleaded guilty to homicide by child abuse or neglect before Circuit Judge Roger Couch. She must serve 80 percent of her prison sentence before she is eligible for release.
Petty admitted to shaking the baby boy, Jordan Roy, while he was in her care on Sept. 20, 2009. According to the Seventh Circuit Solicitor's Office, autopsy results revealed that Roy's death was a result of shaking.
According to a news release from the local solicitor's office, Petty initially told emergency workers who responded to her 911 call that she thought her 4-year-old granddaughter rolled on top of the baby while she was sleeping. Roy died not long after arriving at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Petty called 911 again shortly after Roy's death claiming the baby's mother was going to kill her. When police arrived, Petty had taken a large amount of Tylenol PM and drank a bottle of Colt 45 Malt Liquor and was rushed to the hospital.
As investigators were questioning Petty at the hospital on Sept. 21, Petty admitted to using crack cocaine four days before Roy's death and said she drank two beers the night he was with her. Investigators said Petty admitted to shaking the baby after the autopsy revealed a cause of death.
Petty told investigators that she shook the baby in an attempt to revive him after she accidentally dropped him on his head on a linoleum floor covered by a rug. Autopsy results did not show Roy fell or was dropped.
"Dr. David Wren concluded the cause of death was shaking and shaking alone," Assistant Solicitor Susan Reese stated in a news release. "The medical evidence forced the defendant into a corner she couldn't escape from."
Petty's prior criminal record included a 1998 conviction for criminal domestic violence
