A statewide AMBER alert has been issued for a 4-day-old baby abducted
this afternoon by a woman claiming to be an immigration agent, Metro
police said.
Maria Gurrolla said her son, Yair Anthony Carillo, was taken about
2:40 p.m. today from her home at 3826 East Ridge Drive in south
Nashville.Gurrolla told police the woman was white and in
her mid-30s, with blonde hair in a ponytail. She was about 5 feet 4
inches tall, heavyset and wearing a black blouse and blue jeans. She
was driving a black four-door sedan resembling a police-type vehicle.The
mother said the suspect knocked on her door, claimed to be with INS,

then the woman demanded she give her the baby. When the mother refused,
the woman stabbed her eight times, police said. Her injuries are not
life-threatening.The home on the dead-end south Nashville

porch and yell."I heard her first, and then she reached down to the porch and grabbed something,” he said.He
didn't know what she grabbed, and didn't think it sounded as if she was
hurt. Smith said he didn't see the woman, the car or the baby, and his
first indication something was wrong was when the police arrived.Police
said Gurrolla is at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in serious
condition. Her 3-year-old daughter was home with her at the time of the
abduction, but was unharmed and is now with family.Anyone with information is asked to call Metro police at (615) 862-8600 or the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
An Amber Alert was issued after a woman stabbed a new mother and
kidnapped her newborn baby in Antioch. Late Tuesday, police named Lisa
Sampson as a person of interest.
Sampson was last known to have lived in Lebanon. Police said efforts to locate her were not successful. A
woman reportedly knocked on the door of 30-year-old Maria Gurrolla at
3816 East Ridge Drive Tuesday around 2:40 p.m. Gurrolle told police the
suspect claimed to be with INS and wanted to see her immigration
papers. "When Ms. Gurrolla said who are you? A struggle
ensued and she was stabbed several times," said Metro police
spokesperson Kristin Mumford. After Gurrolla allowed the
suspect inside her South Nashville home, she was stabbed several times
in the neck, head, thigh and breast. The suspect fled the home with
4-day-old Yair Anthony Carillo. Somehow Gurrolla was able to stumble to neighbor Eric Peterson's home to ask for help. "The
lady was telling me all in a calm voice that ‘hey, there's a lady down
there with a butcher knife, a white lady in my kitchen and she fixing
to kill my baby boy,'" said Peterson. Peterson raced to
Gurrolla's house and was able to retrieve her 3-year-old daughter who
was left behind. Gurrolla was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center
with non-life threatening injuries. Metro police and the TBI canvassed the area while family members had one focus. "All
I'm thinking is about the baby. You know she didn't' even take the
milk. Is he eating? Is he ok? Is he alive you know?" said victim's
sister Jessenia Sigala. Yair is a hispanic male with brown hair and black eyes. The
suspect was described as a heavyset white woman in her mid 30s, 5'4"
tall with blonde hair in a pony tail. She wore a black blouse and blue
jeans. Officials said the woman was driving a black four-door car resembling a police vehicle. Police
said the family had never seen the abductor. They wondered if a newborn
baby sign in the front yard may have tipped off the woman. Anyone with information should call police at 615-862-8600 or 1-800-TBI-FIND (1-800-824-3464).

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
The mother of kidnapped newborn Yair Carillo came out of the hospital
in a wheelchair to tell the media about the woman who attacked her.
Maria
Gurrolla, 30, had swollen eyes and a long cut on her cheek. Bandages
covered stab wounds on her neck, and she was wrapped in a blanket that
obscured the rest of the nine stab wounds she received on Tuesday
afternoon.
"I
was attacked by a white woman," Gurrola said in Spanish. Her cousin,
Norma Rodriguez, interpreted. "I don't know the person that did that.
I've never seen her before."The
woman arrived at her doorstep and told her she was an immigration agent
there to arrest her. Gurrolla asked the woman to identify herself. She
said it was soon after that the blonde, heavyset woman pulled a knife
and began to stab her.
She did not tell Gurrolla she intended
to take her child. Gurrolla went out of the house and to a neighbor's
house for help. When they returned, the baby was gone. Gurrolla's
3-year-old daughter was unharmed.
"The only thing she said was that she was going to arrest her," Rodriguez said.
Gurrolla's
mouth tightened when she spoke about her baby son: he has a full head
of hair. He's chubby, with big cheeks and big eyes. Her own eyes
appeared to tear up."Physically, (I) feel fine," she said. "Emotionally, (I) feel sad because of what my family is going through."
She was asked what she would say to the woman who attacked her and took her son.
"She says for her to reflect," Rodriguez said. "She needs her baby back."Police
were initially searching for a Lebanon woman who was reported as a
possible suspect. She was located in upstate New York and is no longer
believed to be involved or a person of interest, Metro police
spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said.

is working with a sketch artist to develop a composite of the suspect,

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
Metro police detectives and special agents from the TBI and FBI are
pursuing a number of leads in Tuesday afternoons abduction of Yair
Anthony Carillo from his home on East Ridge Drive in South Nashville.
The abductor is described as a heavy set white woman in her 30's who had her blonde hair in a pony tail.
The woman is said to speak some Spanish.
Investigators are seeking information on a late model Kia Spectra sedan that was in
the parking lot of Wal-Mart at Nolensville Road and Harding Place
between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The car entered the parking lot at about the same time as Yair and his mother, Maria Gurrolla.
The Kia parked near Gurrollas car.
The driver never got out, but followed Gurrollas car out of the parking lot and onto Nolensville Road.
Surveillance video showed one person was in the Kia, which appears to have an out of state license plate.
Efforts are underway to learn the identity of the driver, who is being sought at this point as a witness.
The Kia driver or anyone with information about the car is urged to contact 1-800-TBI-FIND.
Investigators this afternoon have been re-interviewing Gurrolla and her relatives to
see if they can recall any additional information that will help
advance this case.
Anyone with information about a woman who inexplicably and suddenly has custody of a young infant fitting Yairs
description is urged to contact 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Investigators have a sketch of a suspect in the stabbing of Maria
Gurrolla in her South Nashville home Tuesday and abduction of her
newborn baby.
But police are not ready to
release the sketch to the public, Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said
at a Thursday press conference. There are numerous leads, police say,
but investigators are still puzzled over the motive for the abduction.Yair
Anthony Carillo, who is a week old today, has been missing since
Tuesday, when his mother was attacked. Gurrolla, described her attacker
as a heavy-set, blonde white woman. The 30-year-old mother was stabbed
nine times during the abduction, suffering deep wounds and a collapsed
lung.The
stranger identified herself as an immigration agent, Gurrolla said, and
said she was there to arrest Gurrolla. The woman then attacked Gurrolla
with a butcher knife.Aaron
refused to say whether anything else was taken from the home. However,
after the attacker took the baby, she also grabbed a cell phone from
the house, Gurrolla's cousin said. The abductor has not called, the
family said."We're still upset," said Norma Rodriguez, a relative, "but we're holding in there."Crime
scene analysts, TBI agents and local police were at the East Ridge
Drive home again on Thursday afternoon, looking for evidence. A task
force of local police, TBI and FBI agents is working the case.
Investigators recanvassed the neighborhood.Initially,
the search was focused on a driver of a dark-colored Kia Spectra that
appeared to follow Gurrolla as she left a Walmart on Nolensville Road
on Tuesday. Police describe the driver of that car as a possible
witness.

the house, Gurrolla's cousin said.
Investigators recanvassed the neighborhood.Initially,
the search was focused on a driver of a dark-colored Kia Spectra that
appeared to follow Gurrolla as she left a Walmart on Nolensville Road
on Tuesday. Police describe the driver of that car as a possible
witness.

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
Investigators released a composite sketch of a woman suspected of taking newborn Yair Anthony Carrillo on Tuesday.
“The focus remains the same and that’s his safe return,” said
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm at a press
conference today.Police
say the suspect is heavyset, about 5-feet-4- inches tall with blonde
hair, according to a description given by Maria Garrullo, the baby’s
mother. The kidnapper, saying she was an immigration
agent, attacked Garrullo on Tuesday at her East Ridge Drive home,
stabbing her eight times before fleeing with the baby.It was not described as a nationwide search as police have circulated the sketch just in the Southeast. Metro
Police Officer Rafael Fernandez, of El Protector program, is focusing
on the Hispanic community, with announcements in the local
Spanish-speaking media to help find the baby. Investigators are asking the public to call 1-800-TBI-FIND or 615-862-8600 with any information about the missing baby.

Yair - FOUND SAFE / Suspect in Custody
A days-old infant kidnapped from his South Nashville home was rescued
Friday night in the Tennessee-Alabama border town of Ardmore.
Eight-day-old Yair Anthony Carillo is in good condition, according to Metro police spokesman Don Aaron.Tammy
Renee Silas, 39, of Ardmore, was being questioned at the Morgan County,
Ala., jail after she was taken into custody with the baby at about 10
p.m. Friday, authorities announced at a midnight news briefing.Silas
surrendered without incident and will be charged in the abduction,
although exact charges had not been determined early this morning. The
break in the case came as a task force of Metro police detectives and
special agents from the TBI and FBI developed information on a Kia
Spectra seen Tuesday afternoon following the child and his mother from
the parking lot of Walmart at Nolensville Road and Harding Place, Aaron
said. The baby’s mother, Maria Gurrolla, told police that a woman posing as an immigration agent came into her East Ridge Drive
home Tuesday afternoon, stabbed her and stole the newborn. Investigators used technology to enhance the numbers on the Kia’s license plate and determined that it was a rental car. They learned that Silas had rented the car at Nashville International Airport early Tuesday, the day the child was stolen. My Harrison, special agent in charge of the Memphis office of the FBI,
said the baby is undergoing a routine medical exam and will be reunited
with his family as soon as possible. He appears to be in good health, she said at the midnight news briefing.“I’m so proud this evening of the men and women who served tirelessly day and night to make sure this happened,” Harrison said. “We do not always have this outcome.”Harrison said she could not talk about a motive or what Silas has told police because of the ongoing investigation.Metro Capt. Marlene Pardue said she spoke to the infant’s mother Friday.“One thing the mother said is that before this investigation, she was afraid
of the police. She’s not afraid anymore,” Pardue said.
Silas has been arrested previously in Nashville for drug offenses, according
to Metro Police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford. She has an outstanding
warrant from California on a similar drug charge, Mumford said. The
day of the kidnapping, police issued a photograph of the baby,
broadcast a local Amber Alert and released a description of a suspect. Police
later released a photo of the Kia Spectra taken by a Walmart parking
lot security camera and on Friday released a sketch of the suspect,
described as a heavyset blonde woman in her 30s. The
mother held a news conference Wednesday, and on Friday the department
reached out to the Hispanic community with posters, pictures and a
message in Spanish about the disappearance of the baby.On
Friday, investigators were following dozens of leads, but calls had
slowed. Police were handing out the sketch to motorists in the area
where the child was taken.
FBI's expertise needed
One of the challenges that had faced the task force composed of TBI agents,
Metro police and the FBI, which joined the search on Wednesday, is that
infant abductions are rare. From 1983 to 2009, there have been 265 cases of infant — from birth to 6
months old — abductions nationwide, said Cathy Nahirny, a senior
analyst at the Center for Missing & Exploited Children.Law enforcement agencies don’t usually have experienced people who have investigated such cases, Nahirny said. Nashville has an experienced and well-trained staff, Tennessee Bureau of
Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said earlier Friday, but it’s
unknown if any of the investigators had worked on an infant abduction
case. Gurrolla, who suffered multiple stab wounds and a
collapsed lung, was released from the hospital on Thursday and was
staying with family. Before the rescue, Nahirny said it was doubtful any harm would come to the baby.Profiling
the abductor, she said: “She wants that baby. It’s hers, and she did it
for the man in her life. She wants to keep that baby and the man.”

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
An Alabama woman is facing kidnapping charges in the abduction of a newborn in Tennessee.
Authorities say the infant was taken by a woman posing as an
immigration agent. The child was found safe and sound last night. He's
now in a foster home awaiting a reunion with his mother.
Police have arrested 39-year-old Tammy Renee Silas in the kidnapping.
The child's mother told police a woman claiming she was an immigration
agent arrived at her home Tuesday and stabbed her several times.
The mother ran to the home of a neighbor, who said she came to him
"covered from her head to her toe with blood." He says she asked him to
save her children from the "lady in the kitchen" who had a butcher
knife. When he went over there, he says the baby boy was missing.
The FBI noted "this child has spent half his life away from his family" and said it's time to reunite them.

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
A mother whose newborn was kidnapped
by a knife-wielding woman posing as an immigration agent was briefly
reunited with her baby Saturday, then saw him and her three other
children taken from her and put into state custody.
Rob Johnson, a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Children's
Services, said the children were taken from their mother, Maria
Gurrolla, "purely for safety reasons," though he would not detail why
the state deemed they were in danger.
"Our focus is on the children, and under the current situation right now, we
think the safest thing to do is take the children into state custody,"
he said.
Gurrolla, 30, was stabbed in her
home Tuesday, just four days after giving birth to Yair Anthony
Carillo, who was snatched by the attacker.
Nashville police said the baby was found in good health Friday night at a home in
Ardmore, Ala., about 80 miles south of Nashville near the Tennessee
line.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn said officials arrested Tammy Renee Silas, 39, at
the home in Ardmore. Federal authorities formally charged her Saturday
with kidnapping.
Silas' live-in boyfriend, Martin Rodriguez, said he was shocked by the arrest and didn't think she was capable of the crime.
Speaking through an interpreter, he said Silas told him she was adopting a baby
from a cousin who had to go to jail, and was going to El Paso, Texas,
to get the child. He said he picked Silas up from the Huntsville
airport Tuesday and she had a newborn with her.
"She was acting normal around the baby and I didn't really see any
difference, but I think she was happy," Rodriguez said from their
one-story home, where a box of baby clothes for a boy overflowed in the
dining room. "What woman isn't happy to carry a baby?"
Rodriguez said he met Silas, a contractor, when they both lived in Nashville. He
said Silas is bilingual and was born in Tarrant County, Texas, where
she had family. "The last thing that she said to me was, 'I am so sorry
and I love you,"' Rodriguez said.
Earlier Saturday, officials said the newborn would stay with a foster family as
authorities arranged for Gurrolla to be reunited with her son."This baby is a week old, and this child has
spent half his life away from his family. I think it's time we reunite
them," said My Harrison, a special agent with the FBI in Tennessee.
Johnson said officials made arrangements for Gurrolla to see her baby Saturday
afternoon and hold him, and she brought her three other children — ages
3, 9 and 11 — with her. All four children were then taken into custody.
Johnson, who said he could not discuss details of the situation for
privacy reasons, said a judge would review the case next week to
determine when the children can go home.
Joel Siskovic, an FBI special agent in the Memphis division, said he could
not say why the children were put into state custody. "As of now,
there's no indication that there's an ongoing threat to the family," he
said.
Authorities said they had no word on a possible motive in the kidnapping. Police in Nashville did not know
if Silas has a lawyer. The Morgan County Sheriff's office said Silas
was picked up by U.S. Marshals on Saturday morning, though it was not
known where she was being taken.
The infant's mother told police a heavyset white woman with blonde hair
arrived at her home posing as an immigration agent and attacked her
with a knife.
Gurrolla told investigators that at one point she heard the woman make a phone call and tell
someone in Spanish words to the effect of "the job is done" and that
the mother "was dying," said Siskovic, the FBI agent.
Siskovic said Silas took the victim's cell phone, which helped investigators locate Silas.
He would not comment further on the possibility that Silas was not working alone.
At a Wednesday news conference, Gurrolla told reporters she had never seen her attacker before.
Officials believe Silas followed Gurrolla and her baby from a local office of the
Women, Infants and Children program and to a Walmart store. "I think
it's clear that she was targeting people at that location," Siskovic
said.
Investigators got a break when they
found that a video camera in the Walmart parking lot had captured the
license plate of the car seen following the mother and baby, according
to the arrest warrant.
Cathy Nahirny, a senior analyst for infant abduction cases at the National Center for
Missing & Exploited Children, said there have been at least two
other recent cases where an abductor used a ploy similar to the one
used in this case.
"We need to get the word out to our immigrant communities," Nahirny said. "Anybody that
claims they are from federal law enforcement agencies, you have the
right and you should ask for photo identification."
Abductions of infants by strangers are rare, with nine reported cases so far this
year and five last year, according to the missing child center.
Nahirny said immigrant families have been targets of child abductions because of the assumption they will not tell police.
Gurrolla is Latina but her immigration status isn't clear. She was released from the hospital Thursday.

Was Yair "For Sale"?
A Tennessee newborn kidnapped in a knife attack on his mother was
placed in foster care with his three siblings after allegations arose
that a family member tried to sell the infant, sources familiar with
the case said Monday.Week-old Yair Anthony Carillo was safely
recovered in Alabama on Friday, three days after he was taken from his
Nashville home. Soon after, state officials took the four children away
from their mother, 30-year-old Maria Gurrolla, saying only it was for
the children's safety. An Alabama woman is in custody, facing a federal
kidnapping charge. Two officials confirmed the baby-selling
allegations but spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity
because they weren't authorized to discuss the case.A custody
hearing is set for Tuesday, but records are closed because the case is
in juvenile court, so details on the allegations were not available.
The sources could not say how or if the allegations and the kidnapping
were related.Rob Johnson, a spokesman for the Department of
Children's Services, and spokesmen for the FBI and Nashville police
would not comment on the baby-selling report.Authorities said
the investigation at first focused on finding the baby but now is
looking into exactly what happened and who was involved. Tammy Renee

found the baby at her home about 80 miles south of Nashville.Gurrolla
told investigators that after she was stabbed, the abductor made a
phone call and said in Spanish "The job is done" and that the mother
"was dying," according to the criminal complaint against Silas.Investigators
are still trying to answer "significant questions, perhaps the most
important of which is why this newborn was chosen over everybody else
in the city," Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said.Silas
has given a statement to investigators, according to Tennessee Bureau
of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm, who declined to detail what
Silas said. No one could name a lawyer for Silas. Gurrolla and other
family members could not be reached at her home on Monday, and it
wasn't clear if they are being represented.Silas has not been
charged in the attack on Gurrolla, who was stabbed several times and
suffered a collapsed lung. Gurrolla told police that her attacker
claimed to be an immigration agent.Gurrolla had pleaded at a
news conference the day after the kidnapping for the baby to be
returned. But her reunion with him on Saturday was short because state
child welfare officials quickly took him and the other three children —
ages 3, 9 and 11 — and placed them in foster care. DCS officials have
not elaborated on why beyond citing concerns for the children's safety."Like
everyone in Tennessee and beyond, we want this episode to have the
happy ending it deserves," Commissioner Viola P. Miller said in a
statement released Monday before the baby-selling reports became
public. "We, as much as anyone, want to see these children reunited
with their family and out of state custody."Gurrolla told
investigators she had never seen the woman who stabbed her. According
to the arrest warrant, Gurrolla was targeted while she and a cousin,
identified only as "JS," were running errands and visiting a state food
assistance office.A car that police said Silas rented was seen
on a surveillance video following Gurrolla before the attack, and the
car rental information led police to her home.Yair Anthony
Carillo's father lives in Nashville, and Gurrolla's marital status was
unclear. Police have said they were treating the case as a stranger
kidnapping."There's no indication that the suspect is related to these people," Aaron said.Police
have not released a motive, but Silas' live-in boyfriend, Martin
Rodriguez, told The Associated Press that she said she could not have
children and wanted to adopt a child from a relative in Texas who was
going to jail.Johnson declined to talk specifically about the
Gurrolla case but said taking children into custody after a kidnapping
is not necessarily standard procedure. He said the caseworkers saw
something in this situation that made them concerned enough that they
felt the safest thing to do was find a foster home for the children.

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
A custody hearing is set for a
kidnapped newborn and his three siblings on Tuesday after the children
were taken from their mother following accusations that the family
tried to sell the baby.
Maria Gurrolla was briefly reunited with her 1-week-old son Yair Anthony
Carillo over the weekend before state child welfare officials placed
all four children in foster care.
Two officials confirmed allegations that a family member tried to sell
Yair, but spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity
because they were not authorized to discuss the case. They could not
say how or if the allegations were related to the kidnapping.
A custody hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. Records are closed because the case is in juvenile court.
The baby was safely recovered in Alabama on Friday, three days after he was
snatched from his Nashville home. His mother said he was taken after a
woman posing as an immigration agent attacked her with a knife.
An Alabama woman is in custody, facing a federal kidnapping charge. State
officials said only that they took Gurrolla's children after Yair was
found because of safety concerns.Rob Johnson, a spokesman for the Department of
Children's Services, and spokesmen for the FBI and Nashville police
would not comment on the baby-selling report.
Authorities said investigators at first focused on finding the baby but now are
looking into exactly what happened and who was involved. Tammy Renee
Silas, 39, was charged after authorities said they found the baby at
her home about 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of Nashville.
Gurrolla told investigators that after she was stabbed, the abductor made a
phone call and said in Spanish "The job is done" and that the mother
"was dying," according to the criminal complaint against Silas.
Investigators are still trying to answer "significant questions, perhaps the most
important of which is why this newborn was chosen over everybody else
in the city," Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said.
Silas has given a statement to investigators, according to Tennessee Bureau
of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm, who declined to detail what
she said. No one could name a lawyer for her. Gurrolla and other family
members could not be reached at her home on Monday, and it wasn't clear
if they are being represented.Silas has not been charged in the attack on Gurrolla, who was stabbed several times and suffered a collapsed lung.

Re: YAIR CARRILLO - 4 days - Nashville TN
Attorneys preparing for a scheduled trial next month of an Alabama
woman charged with kidnapping a Nashville infant say the investigation
is ongoing and they are still analyzing evidence.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Phil Wehby and defense attorney Isaiah
"Skip" Gant told a federal judge on Friday that they don't believe they
will be ready for the Jan. 12 trial for Tammy Renee Silas, but U.S.
District Court Judge Todd J. Campbell did not change the scheduled date.
Silas has been in custody since Oct. 2 after police found the
week-old infant, Yahir Anthony Carillo, at Silas' home in Ardmore, Ala.
He was kidnapped and his mother stabbed three days earlier at their
Nashville home.
Gant said he is still going through evidence, including all the tips
given to police during the search, video surveillance and hundreds of
documents.
