Casselberry mother with a history of suicide attempts was arrested
today after police said she strangled her toddler with her hands and a
bra.
Nioshka Bello, 22, was arrested upon release from South Seminole
Hospital in Longwood. Police said she was involuntary committed under
the state's Baker Act after a suicide attempt. Investigators say Bello
swallowed pills after killing 2-year-old Janessa Sandoval on Saturday.
A medical examiner on Sunday ruled the death a homicide.
Bello on Sunday and Monday told officers that she strangled her
daughter, they said. A report does not indicate why. Janessa was taken
to Florida Hospital Altamonte, where she was pronounced dead.
Bello and her daughter were staying with Bello's mother and stepfather
in Castlewood Apartments. Bello woke her mother, Figueroa, 44, about
7:30 a.m. asking for help, a report states. Figueroa found that Janessa
was not breathing.

The Seminole
County Sheriff's office today released a 3-minute 911 call placed
Saturday morning by the stepfather of a woman who is accused of
first-degree murder in the strangulation death of her 2-year-old
daughter.
Nioshka Bello, 22, was arrested Tuesday night in the death of her
daughter Janessa Sandoval. She is being held without bail in the
Seminole County Jail in Sanford.
"The baby was sleeping," Roberto Ruiz told a Sheriff's Office
dispatcher in the call from his residence at the Castlewood Apartments
in Casselberry. "The mother I don't know what the mother did."
Screaming and crying in the background at times made it hard for Ruiz
to hear the dispatcher. At one point he told someone: "Relax, put the
baby down."
"I hear by wife crying, screaming, so it's a little chaotic right now,"
he said after being transferred to a fire-rescue dispatcher.
When that dispatcher inquired about what was wrong with the child, Ruiz
said: "The baby's not breathing. I don't know what the mother did to
the daughter."
"My wife is having a nervous breakdown," he told the dispatcher. Just
before the call ended, he said; "The mother is trying to take pills."
Bello was taken to Orlando Regional South Seminole Hospital in Longwood
after taking several pills in an apparent suicide attempt, Casselberry
police said. She was arrested when she was released from the hospital.

One day in September, Nioshka Bello thought she had reached a breaking point.
She was 22, a single mother living in Casselberry.
She had no job, no income, and the next day, she was going to be forced out of her home.
Her mother and stepfather were moving to Orlando. Bello and her
daughter would be, essentially, homeless.
She told police she called an
old boyfriend in Brooklyn and begged him to take her back. She read him a poem
she had written. But he had a new girlfriend and was tired and on the road. He hung up on her.
And that Sept. 25 night, she tried to kill herself, she
told Casselberry police Det. James Goodman. She failed at that, too, so she
peeled off the bra she was wearing — it was white with hearts — wrapped it
around her 2-year-old daughter's neck and strangled her, she told Goodman.
Details about Bello's life and the night her child died were released recently by the state attorney's office in Seminole
County, following a public records request by the Orlando Sentinel.
They reveal a troubled young mother with a history of
domestic violence who was desperate. Help was only hours away: The family of her
former boyfriend offered to give her money, to take her in or come to Florida to
help find her a home.
Why she chose not to accept those things is unclear.
She is now in a state mental hospital, having been found
mentally incompetent to stand trial in the death of her daughter. A Seminole
County grand jury indicted her in October on a charge of first-degree
premeditated murder.
Bello confessed to Casselberry police detectives after praying with them in a Longwood
mental ward two days after her daughter's death. She didn't say why she killed
Janessa Sandoval, only that she was intent on killing herself, and when that
didn't work, she grew frustrated and killed her only child.
Bello was a loving and attentive mother, her sister Edualiz Olan said. Bello called her child "Lil Diva," Olan said.
The baby's father, 22-year-old Christopher Sandoval of Brooklyn, told a prosecutor he had no clue Bello intended to hurt
his daughter, even though they had had angry words on the phone the night Janessa died.
She yelled and screamed at him, he said, as he was driving home from work.
"She'd say, ‘Oh, you're going to make me do something I don't want to do,' "
he told Assistant State Attorney Stacey Salmons in a Jan. 6 interview.
He thought Bello meant she would take up with another man.
"I never pictured it would be that," he said of the killing.
The night Janessa was killed, Bello was living with her mother
and stepfather in a Casselberry apartment, but many of their belongings were
boxed up or gone. The couple was scheduled to move the following day, according
to a police report.
Bello, though, would not be allowed to go with them,
according to Sandoval.
He offered to send Bello several hundred dollars so she and the child could move to Brooklyn.
"I asked Nioshka, ‘How would you like to come to New York? By plane, train or bus,
you let me know, and I'll get the ticket.' " Sandoval told Salmons.
Sandoval's father also offered help. John Sandoval, 63, told Salmons he gave
Bello two options the night before the baby died: He would let Bello and the
child move into his Brooklyn home or he would come to Orlando, rent them an
apartment and stay a few weeks, helping with money and child care until Bello
could get a job.
"She was happy with that," John Sandoval told Salmons.
"That's why I don't understand what happened here."
Bello's mother, Brenda Figueroa, 44, referred questions to her daughter's attorney, Tim Caudill,
who was unavailable for comment.
Prosecution records indicate Bello has a
history of being emotionally volatile and sometimes violent.
In 2009, she fought often with Christopher Sandoval, according to police records in Lancaster,
Pa., where they lived at the time. Police went to their home at least three
times because of reports of violence.
Sandoval said Monday that police were involved much more often than that.
"The other three or four times they came, it was me calling the cops," he said. "She attacked me."
Bello also fought with her mother and her sister, police and prosecution records show.
And when she was a 17-year-old student at Lake Howell High School, she got into
an after-school fist fight with another girl at a bus stop.
The murder case against Bello, however, is stalled until mental health experts and a judge
determine she's healthy enough to stand trial. There's no telling when that
could happen.
Records about Bello's mental state are sealed. In October,
when Caudill asked a judge to find her mentally incompetent to stand trial, he
would not discuss her diagnosis.
But prosecution records show Bello had
tried to kill herself before. When she was 15, she drank a combination of
bleach, Snuggle fabric softener, milk and household cleaner. She told her
mother, "If the cops take me away, when I return home I will get a gun and kill
myself. I do not want to be part of this family anymore," according to a police
report from Lancaster, Pa.
Her most recent suicide attempt was the night
the baby died. The next morning paramedics who rushed to the house found two
emergencies: A toddler who wasn't breathing and Bello, who had taken 20 Benadryl
tablets and a great deal of Tylenol.
The toddler went by ambulance to one hospital, Bello went to another.
At her hospital, Bello heard a baby yelling in the emergency room and asked if that was her child, Casselberry
Officer Jennifer Lynn Hall wrote in her report. The young mother then lapsed
into a seizure, lost consciousness and was taken to the intensive care unit.

But mental health experts at the hospital have filed a new report – it's sealed - and a Sanford judge is to hold a hearing in the case, with Bello present, Oct. 7.
Bello went to the state hospital last October after prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed she was mentally incompetent.
Her 2-year-old daughter, Janessa Sandoval, died Sept. 25, 2009, in the bed she was sharing with her mother.

SANFORD — Nioshka Bello, the young Casselberry mother charged with strangling her 2-year-old daughter with a bra, is back in the Seminole County Jail.
A judge on Monday found her mentally competent to stand trial. Her trial won't begin until after the first of the year.
Bello, 23, is charged with first-degree murder. She was arrested Sept. 29, 2009 after she confessed to strangling her 2-year-old daughter as they spent the night together in bed.
That evening, Bello had argued with the child's father. Bello also believed that the next day she would be left homeless.
Bello tried to kill herself with an overdose of medicine, she told police, and when that failed, strangled her daughter. Bello then tried to overdose again and was taken to the hospital before being arrested.
A short time later, her attorney and prosecutors agreed that she was not competent to stand trial, and she was sent to a state mental hospital.
A report about her mental state is in a sealed envelope in her court file, but Circuit Judge O.H. Eaton Jr. three weeks ago signed an order to have her brought back to Seminole County, and in it wrote that she no longer needs to be in a mental facility.
He officially declared her competent Monday at a hearing that Bello did not attend.

SANFORD — When two of the best known mental-health experts in the Orlando area
first met Nioshka Bello, she was in a fetal position on the floor of the
Seminole County Jail. She had been that way for days, refusing to talk,
eat, drink or move, they said Monday.
Two weeks earlier, in
September 2009,she had strangled her 2-year-old daughter with her bra in
a fit of despair and rage, she told police.
In jail in that
catatonic state, psychiatrist Jeffrey Danziger and psychologist Daniel
Tressler said, Bello was clearly severely mentally ill. Both men agreed
in October 2009 that she was incompetent to be triedfor murder.
The issue of mental-health competency sometimes arises in cases in which
parents are accused of murdering a child. In this case, the assessment
of Bello's fitness for trial has changed with time.
On Monday,
both experts said she has improved dramatically after getting treatment
at a state mental hospital but is now telling "nonsensical" stories and
faking symptoms.
She will likely stand trial in April.
When Danziger interviewed her recently, he testified, she pretended there
was another person in the room and began yelling at him. She claimed to
see bloody, horned demons, he said, and insisted she was not Nioshka
Bello.
When Tressler last interviewed her, staffers at the state
hospital told him her behavior was more normal, that she chatted with
people and watched TV. But once he showed up, she pulled a blanket over
her head and said people were trying to hurt her, he testified Monday.
Yes, she has a history of mental illness, Tressler said, but now she's acting.
On Monday, Circuit Judge Jessica Recksiedler listened toan audio recording
of Bello's15-minute confession and ruled that the defendant knew what
she was doing when she waived her right to remain silent, and thus,
prosecutors are free to play the confession for jurors.
Bello, now 24, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her
daughter, Janessa Sandoval. Last week, the judge found Bello competent
to stand trial.
Bello said nothing at Monday's two-hour hearing,
but when Assistant State Attorney Stacey Salmons played her confession,
Bello dabbed away tears, something made difficult by handcuffs that were
chained to her waist.
The night the child died, Bello had no
job, no money and the following day she was going to become homeless,
according to prosecution records.
On the recording, she told Casselberry
police Sgt. James Goodman she had just gotten into a telephone
screaming match with the child's father, begging him to take her back or
to give her money, but he had a new girlfriend, she said, and told her
to kill herself.
"'Strangle yourself, OK,' " she quoted him as saying.
She attempted suicide, she said, taking several over-the-counter drugs. She didn't pass out, though, so she went to the store, bought more and took those.
"What happened to the baby?" Goodman asked.
"I killed her," Bello said, sobbing.
"How did you do that?" Goodman asked.
"With my hands," she sobbed. "That's the honest truth. … I used my bra, too."
She was in a Longwood hospital at the time, on the verge of being admitted to a mental ward because of her suicide attempt.
"Did they do a funeral for my baby?" she asked Goodman at the time. "I want to be there."

A Florida mother recently released from a mental hospital will spend the rest of her life in prison for strangling her daughter with a bra.
Following a judge's decision to proceed with the trial, Nioshka Bello was found guilty on Wednesday of first-degree murder in the death of 2-year-old Janessa Sandoval, NEWS-13 reported.
The jury took just a few hours to reach a verdict, which Judge Jessica Recksiedler immediately followed with a life sentence, according to CBS.
