Warner Robins Police were called to the Houston Medical Center early this morning to search for a newborn.
Police spokesperson, Tabitha Pugh says, a nurse called the police
officer on-duty at the hospital after examining a woman who appeared to
have given birth recently. When they searched the hospital, they found
a deceased female newborn in the public restroom of the emergency
room. An autopsy is being conducted to determine if the child was
alive at the time of birth.
Police say the mother is a Hispanic female in her 20s and speaks very
little English, which is slowing their investigation. She is being
treated at the hospital. Charges are pending based on the outcome of
the investigation, including the autopsy results.
Detective Tom Williams of the Warner Robins Police Department is
heading up the investigation. Anyone who may have additional
information is encouraged to contact Detective Williams at 929-1163.

Warner Robins, Georgia (The Weekly Vice) - Maria Isabel Torres-Baez, a 22-year-old Georgia woman was arrested for murder Tuesday after delivering a baby in a hospital bathroom and then strangling it to death.
According to Warner Robins police, officers were dispatched to Houston Medical Center last Thursday morning after a newborn baby was found strangled to death in a bathroom at the hospital.
Investigators say Terres-Baez came to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain. Sometime during her visit, she went to the restroom and delivered the child.
She was waiting to be seen by a physician when the infant was discovered dead.
Torres-Baez allegedly used her hands to murder the child, according to Warner Robins Police spokesperson, Tabitha Pugh.
Torres-Baez, who is from Guatemala and does not speak English, was booked into the Houston County Jail on a charge of murder. Bond has not yet been set in the case.

Woman pleads guilty in death of infant found in hospital restroom
PERRY -- A woman accused of strangling her newborn in a public restroom at Houston Medical Center in 2009 pleaded guilty Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter in Houston County Superior Court.
Maria Isabel Torres-Baez, 24, of Guatemala, was sentenced to seven years in a state Department of Corrections facility before she is expected to be deported on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.
She was given credit for time served, having been jailed in Houston County since the Oct. 1, 2009, incident. She was indicted in 2009 on charges of murder, felony murder and aggravated assault.
“There is a life lost, and there’s a punishment and penalty for that,” Judge Edward D. Lukemire told Torres-Baez when denying her request for the state prison system to deport her immediately.
Shackled and wearing a dark and light gray striped jail jumpsuit, Torres-Baez’s only statement to the judge through a court-certified interpreter had been that she wished to be deported.
Also, the judge declined to impose a fine as a part of the sentence.
“It almost cheapens that baby’s life to put a dollar figure on it,” Lukemire said from the bench.
Julia Bowen, an assistant district attorney prosecuting the case, told the judge Torres-Baez had a live child in a public restroom, strangled her within moments of birth, put the body in a trash bin and then went and received treatment.
But because of differing expert medical opinions expected to be presented at trial and the possibility that one juror might believe the defense’s case, Bowen said she agreed to the negotiated plea agreement.
“I think it’s a fair and just result based on the circumstances,” Bowen said outside of the courtroom.
The autopsy ruled the cause of death as strangulation. The defense was expected to present an argument based on a pregnancy complication known as placental abruption, Bowen said.
During the hearing, Carolyn Hall, an assistant public defender representing Torres-Baez, told the judge the issue of contention between the prosecution and defense was that the fetus was “dying and expelling from her body.”
Hall also referenced pregnancy denial disorder as part of the expected defense had the case gone to trial.
Torres-Baez, who did not know she was pregnant, thought she had appendicitis when she came into the emergency room with her father and other relatives, Hall told the judge. Family and coworkers also did not know Torres-Baez was pregnant, Hall said.
Torres-Baez, who is “mournfully sorrow that it occurred,” panicked and did not know what to do, Hall told the judge.
Coming from a culture where it was taboo to be pregnant and not married, Hall said, Torres-Baez lived in a split-up apartment with family members in Warner Robins in which there were to two to three cots per room. She was allowed to keep only $50 a month of what she earned, with the rest sent to the patriarch of the family, Hall said.
Torres-Baez also suffers from depression and is taking medication for it, Hall said.
The infant girl was estimated at 8 months gestation, according to police, who were dispatched to the hospital at 2:44 a.m. after the discovery of the newborn’s body in the emergency room restroom.
