A 25-year-old mother was ordered held on $200,000
bond Monday after being charged with murder for allegedly hiding the
newborn girl in a plastic bag in her North Side apartment.
Marisol Molina of the 6100 block of North Sheridan Road is charged with one count of murder, police said Monday.
Judge Israel Desierto set bond at $200,000 during a Monday hearing,
Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.
Molina will appear for a preliminary hearing March 12.
Baby girl Molina, born Thursday, was found dead at 6157 N. Sheridan
Rd., according to a Cook County Medical Examiner’s office spokesman,
who said the newborn was found dead in a closet. A Saturday autopsy was
inconclusive, with results pending further studies, the medical
examiner’s office said.
Marisol Molina gave live birth to the baby and then placed her inside a
plastic bag and concealed the bag in a closet, causing her death,
police said.
Police were notified about 6:30 p.m. Friday, but it was unclear who called police, News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien said.
The Illinois Dept. of Children and Family Services is investigating the
death, but had no prior contact with the family, DCFS spokesman Jimmie
Whitlow said. There are no other children in the family.

A 25-year-old North Side woman induced the delivery of her baby with
pills, ripped the umbilical cord with her hands and then threw the baby
girl in a bedroom closet “as if it were a bag of garbage,” Cook County
prosectors said Monday.
Marisol Molina, who was seven to nine months into her
pregnancy, wrapped the baby in a robe and tied her in a plastic bag
Thursday before hiding her at home — where the baby was discovered dead
a day later, Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin DeBoni said.
Marisol Molina
The Medical Examiner’s Office determined the girl had air in the lungs and
stomach, which indicated she was born alive and had taken some breaths,
DeBoni said.
Molina was charged with murder and could face capital
punishment if convicted. She was ordered held in lieu of $200,000 bail
Monday.
Molina had ordered the abortion drug Misoprostol on the
Internet on Feb. 12, and then took 10 of the pills on Wednesday, DeBoni
said. Misoprostol, which causes contractions to expel the embryo, is
usually administered after women are given Mifeprex — commonly known as
the abortion pill RU-486, which blocks the a hormone that maintains
pregnancy. Molina told police she knew about the drug from one of the
two prior abortions, DeBoni said.
Molina used her hands to rip the baby’s umbilical cord when she
gave birth to her daughter on the the toilet at her home in the 6100
block of North Sheridan Road, DeBoni said.
Later that evening, Molina’s boyfriend took her to the hospital when she started feeling sick.
Molina initially denied she gave birth but then admitted she had
a baby. Doctors had to induce her placenta, which showed she was
between seven and nine months into her pregnancy, DeBoni said. The
umbilical cord also showed that Molina was in her third trimester,
DeBoni said.
Authorities found the baby in the closet Friday after Molina told them where she put the child, DeBoni said.
“The defendant induced the birth of her child only to wrap the
baby in a robe and then tie the baby in a plastic bag and discard the
bag in a closet as if it were a bag of garbage,” DeBoni said. “The
defendant left that helpless baby to die while inside this bag
concealed in a closet.”
Molina, an employee of Macy’s, recently graduated with a degree
in fine arts at the International Academy of Design and Technology, her
attorney Reem Odeh said.
“We will be able to prove her innocence in the upcoming procedures and hearings,” Odeh said.

Marisol Molina Gets Three Years For Leaving Newborn Baby To Die
First Posted: 05/24/11
Marisol Molina pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Monday, for taking a handful of abortion pills before having her baby, then leaving the infant girl tied in a plastic bag in a closet to die.
According to CBS, Molina ordered Misoprostol on the internet, a drug commonly used in abortions to induce contractions and expel an embryo. But Molina took the pill when she was apparently between seven and nine months pregnant.
She gave birth on the toilet in her home to a living baby girl on February 18, 2010. The 25-year-old mother then allegedly ripped the umbilical cord with her bare hands, wrapped the girl in a robe, tied her in a plastic bag and left her in a closet.
“The defendant induced the birth of her child only to wrap the baby in a robe and then tie the baby in a plastic bag and discard the bag in a closet as if it were garbage,” assistant Cook County state’s attorney Kevin DeBoni said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “The defendant left that helpless baby to die inside this bag concealed in a closet.”
Authorities found the baby dead the following day, after Molina felt ill, went to the hospital, and disclosed to doctors that she had had a baby. An autopsy showed air in the girl's lungs and stomach, indicating that she had been alive before she was placed in the bag, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Molina was originally charged with murder, but pled to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. She was sentenced to three years in prison.
