Reno police asked for the public's
assistance Friday as they seek clues into the disappearance of a
teenage girl who went for a bike ride and never returned."It appears foul play is involved in the disappearance of Karamjit Kaur," police Lt. Mike Whan said.Kaur, 16, came to Nevada eight months ago from East India.
On Wednesday, she told her family she was hot and left her house around
6:30 p.m. to ride the family's bike. She had no possessions with her.
When she didn't return within a half hour, the family started looking for her and then called police. The girl was dressed in a short-sleeve T-shirt, bright blue cotton pajama bottoms, and black flip-flops.Officers
searched through the night Wednesday with dogs and helicopters. They
went door-to-door talking to neighbors and contacted registered sex
offenders in the area."We still have no investigative leads," Whan said.Kaur's red and silver mountain bike was found Thursday afternoon about a quarter mile away at a skateboard park."She
had just been learning to ride the bike for the past month, so she
normally only rode it in front of the house," Whan told the Reno
Gazette-Journal.He said authorities do not believe she ran away."She's
never done that before and the family says it is not in her character,"
Whan said. "She has only been in the country eight months and it is not
part of their culture. She normally doesn't leave the house unless
she's with her brother or one of her sisters."Whan said it's
unknown whether Kaur left the bike at the park, or if someone else
found it elsewhere and then left it there. There was no sign the bike
had been damaged by a car.But he said knowing how the bike got there, and where it was when Kaur was last with it, is key to their investigation."If we knew where the bike had been left when she left it, we would be concentrating our search in that area instead," he said.Kaur is described as 5-foot-7, 140 pounds, with long black hair, brown eyes, and a scar on her forehead.

The three juvenile males whom Reno police were looking for have been
interviewed. They told Reno detectives that they found Karamjit Kaur's
bike in the area of Shifting Sands Drive and Beach Cove on Wednesday
night on the side of the street, next to the sidewalk, and they took
the bike to the location where it was later found. They are not
considered suspects in the disappearance of Karamjit. Without
assistance from the media and the public, the Reno Police Department
would have never learned the true location where Karamjit was last
riding her bike. Detectives are still looking for residents or
witnesses to come forward on any information leading to the location of
the missing girl.

Reno police are reaching out to North Valley High School students in
hopes they will report information about a man seen at school with
missing 16-year-old student Karamjit Kaur.
Kaur's
family reported to police she was last seen around 6:30 p.m.,
Wednesday, riding her mountain bike in front of her home in Stead.Media
attention to the case prompted several students to call Secret Witness
and the detective tip line, who said they had seen Kaur at school with
a Middle Eastern male, who was older than a student. The reports said
he would visit with her during breaks.Police are asking
students to report any and all information they may have about the
unidentified Indian man, and possibly any vehicle he was seen driving.Kaur,
who moved to Reno from India less then a year ago, lived in a strict
home, and was usually supervised by her father, and younger brother.
The supervision occurred anytime she was outside the home, police said. When
Kaur told her mother Wednesday evening she wanted to ride her bike
because she was "hot," her father and brother had been shopping for
school supplies, police said. A few minutes later, her mother became
concerned and realized her daughter was not riding in front of their
home. A relative who speaks English called police.Kaur
had took off on her bike wearing flip flops and pajamas, and was not
believed to have brought any items with her, such as clothing or a
purse. Police said she just learned how to ride the bike, and typically
did not stray far from her home.Three teen boys soon
after she left her house found her bike abandoned by a busy
intersection. One boy rode the bike home, and abandoned it in a culvert.Police said Kaur has not been seen or heard from since, which is uncharacteristic.

Local Indiana police along with the F-B-I found the teen just before six this morning.
Family, friends, and the community are thrilled this did not turn into a homicide
After 72 hours thoughts can turn toward the worst case scenario.
');
Still there are a lot of unanswered questions concerning the 16-year old's
disappearance, and why this case led all the way to Indiana?
“No, No English,” those were the comments from the teen’s mother today.
Karamjit Kaur's mother could not tell anything about the safe recovery of her
daughter. On September 30th the family reported the 16-year old
missing, her bike found in a ditch near her home. Flyers appeared all
over town for any information that could have led to her whereabouts.
Today those same banners were being taken down near the Sikh temple.
“Well only I care she is at home. Her mother feels great I guess that's
really good, she is at home right now and thanks to everybody, the
media and the channels,” said Gaganeev Singh, a family friend.
The Sikh community wasn't alone in its search for the 16-year old girl.
The Bring Bri Justice Foundation helped mobilize nearly 100 volunteers who
were anxious to help. Some also put up flyers, others helped in the
search.
Vigils were held, candles lit, and ribbons worn. And
although there are still some unanswered questions about the foundation
says no effort was wasted in trying locate Kaur.
“You know we are just happy she is home. As far as people wanting to...if it
happens again, just come and and be hopeful you have an end result of a
live person,” said Lauren Dennison from the Bring Bri Justice
Foundation.
Reno Police says students and staff at North Valley's High School helped identify Parvinder Singh the brother-in-law.
Reno Police say the investigation into this case continues, however,
Parvinder Singh is not in custody and faces no charges at this time.

Re: KARAMJT KAUR - 16 yo - Reno NV
A Reno teenager was
returning home with her family Tuesday after she sparked a five-day
search by abruptly leaving for Indiana with her 29-year-old
brother-in-law, Reno police said. The 16-year-old girl, Karamjit
Kaur, said she voluntarily left Reno last week with 29-year-old
Parvinder Singh, a convenience store owner from Merrillville, Ind.,
Reno police Lt. Mike Whan told The Associated Press. "There was no force—this was something they had planned out," Whan said. The
pair were found Monday in a Merrillville hotel room, and Karamjit's
parents flew to Indiana that day to reunite with her, Whan said. It
was not immediately clear whether Singh had a sexual relationship with
the girl, who is his pregnant wife's sister, Whan said. He said
Karamjit told investigators in Indiana that "she didn't want to go home
and that she wanted to be there," Whan said. Whan said Reno police planned to question Karamjit when she returns to Nevada. Singh has not been arrested or charged with any crimes, though authorities are considering federal and state charges. FBI
Special Agent Joseph Dickey said agents in Indiana were reviewing the
circumstances of Kaur's disappearance to see if charges are warranted. Nevada's
age of consent is 16, though federal laws for transporting a minor
across state lines for the purposes of sex apply to children 18 and
younger. "They're sifting through the facts to try to determine if anything can be filed," Dickey said. Whan
said Singh's wife had been staying in Reno with her parents and her
sister because of her pregnancy, and Singh periodically visited the
family from Indiana. The girl's father dropped Singh off at the
airport to end a three-week visit, but Singh rented a car instead of
getting on a plane, Whan said. Whan said Singh visited the teen
at her high school for the next few days until she disappeared. He said
investigators got a break in finding her when students and staff said
an older man described as Singh was visiting her. The teen
disappeared Sept. 30 after leaving her home on a bicycle with no other
possessions. The bike was later found by three children.

Re: KARAMJT KAUR - 16 yo - Reno NV
Reno Police say Karamjit Kaur, 16, who
ran away from home with her brother-in-law last week and was located in
Indiana with him Monday morning, has been reunited with her family.
Authorities
are still considering possible state and federal charges against
Parvinder Singh, 29, who is married to Kaur's older sister.
"We're
going to sit down with the Attorney General and the District Attorney's
office and see what types of criminal charges can be brought forward,"
said Lt. Mike Whan. "Because they traveled by car across the states, in
every state there might be violations based on the fact that she was
only 16."
Singh has not been arrested or charged in connection
with the case. Kaur's disappearance prompted hundreds of officers and
volunteers to scour the hills near her home in Stead for four days
before she was found.
Meantime, representatives of the Sikh
community have donated $1,000 to the Bring Bri Justice Foundation,
which aided in the search, and to a non-profit training fund for the
Reno Police Department.
"We are here to thank the police for their efforts," a member of the Sikh community said. "You guys did a great job."
