Police were continuing their search this morning for a 16-year-old
developmentally disabled girl who was last seen being dropped off by a
school bus.
Mariah Noreen Lester was last seen Thursday afternoon near Southeast 63rd
Avenue and Wicker Court, said Lt. Michael Rouches, spokesman for
Hillsboro police.
Rouches said police do not suspect foul play is involved in the girl's disappearance.
"We're calling it an endangered person at this point," Rouches said this
morning. "We don't think someone picked her up or anything like that."
Rouches said Hillsboro Police searched for her throughout the night. Lester has
family in Salem, but Rouches said police don't believe she tried to go
there.
"The condition she has, she's not going to mix with
folks," Rouches said. "We worry that she won't go up to somebody and
say, 'Hey, I'm lost.' She could have gotten on a bus or train, but
that's unlikely."
Lester was dropped off by the bus at 3:40
p.m. Thursday. Rouches said police were notified of her disappearance
in the early evening by the Albertina Kerr Centers, which runs the home
where she lives.
"Today, we're amping it up," Rouches said.
"We want to get her found before tonight (because of the rain and cold,
wet weather) for sure."
Lester is 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. She has long brown hair and brown eyes and wears
black rimmed glasses. Rouches said she was last seen wearing a blue
sweatshirt, black pants and white shoes.
Rouches said that anyone who has seen Lester should call 9-1-1.
