A 13-year-old Marion Township girl missing since Wednesday evening
was found sleeping in a downtown Howell coffee shop late Thursday
morning. Livingston
County law enforcement officers began searching for Gabrielle Tanez
Butler on Wednesday evening after learning she had walked away from her
home in the Kingswood subdivision in the area of D-19 and Schafer Road
in Marion Township between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. over "an issue with her
school report card," a Michigan State Police sergeant at the Brighton post said. The
search — which included officers from three agencies, a state police
dog unit and helicopter — resumed early Thursday morning, ending
shortly before 11:15 a.m. when a passer-by noticed the girl walking
along Grand River Avenue."Because
of the media reports, a guy came to the post and said, 'I just saw this
girl.' We showed him a picture and he said, 'That's her,' " Sgt. Mark
Thompson explained.A Howell police officer then located Butler inside Uptown Coffeehouse at Grand River and Michigan avenues in Howell."The officer found her sitting in a chair, sleeping," Thompson explained. The
sergeant said the girl indicated that she had spent the night in an
abandoned home where she slept on a bench. The girl did not know where
the home was located, he said. The girl said when she woke up Thursday, she just began walking. She did not say why she didn't return home, Thompson noted.Police
said Butler left her family home Wednesday wearing blue jeans and a
dark plaid jacket. She was initially seen walking Thursday in the area
of Brady and Brighton roads in Genoa Township. A police dog lost the
girl's tracks near Treasure Lake Drive, a private road north of Brighton Road in Genoa Township. The
search Thursday expanded into Howell when officers learned the girl's
family once lived in the area near the Meijer store at Grand River
Avenue and Latson Road. Officers thought the girl might try to return
to that area to visit friends.Police
were concerned Butler, who has no history of being a runaway, may have
experienced health issues due to exposure from the cool night
temperatures, but she was fine when found and no ambulance was
necessary, Thompson said. The search involved two helicopters, a gater and all-terrain vehicle from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, four state troopers, Howell police officers, and local residents.Thompson
estimated officials spent upward of $150,000 in resources looking for
the girl. He said the teen and her family most likely would not be
billed for the expense because police do not want to discourage them
from reporting their children missing out of fear of being billed for
the search.
