Re: "Baby" WALKER - Newborn - Garden City MI
Four teenage girls walked by a dumpster in Garden City on Friday and heard what sounded like a baby or cat crying.
Unsure what to do, one of the girls contacted her father, who arrived to investigate.
"When I went to move the one bag, I felt it and it moved," Ron Smith said.
"And I was like "Oh, my God, there is something in here.' And then
that's when we opened up the bag, and there it was. That's when I
freaked out."
Smith found a 7-pound, 4-ounce newborn --
umbilical cord still attached -- in a plastic grocery bag and started
yelling for someone in the neighboring collision shop to call 911.
"I just couldn't believe it. I was just... I don't know why someone
would do that. It was just horrifying," Kori Detoy, one of the four
girls credited with saving the baby's life, told the media.
Medics rushed the infant to the hospital and she appeared to be in relatively-good health.
Detectives
found a receipt in the bag with the child, and used it to track down
the infant's mother, who was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has yet to announce if any charges will be filed against the mother.
Garden City Police Deputy Chief Robert Muery reminded the Detroit Free Press that Michigan has a law allowing mothers to leave their newborns at a hospital, police or fire station, no questions asked.
Three days after making the discovery, the girls are shaken but glad to have helped.
"I feel so happy that we saved a baby's life," Hannah Dehetre said. "And that baby could be President, you know?"
