Contra
Costa sheriff's investigators arrested an 18-year-old San Pablo man on
suspicion of kidnapping and child molestation after he showed up to a
meeting with deputies this morning with a missing 13-year-old girl and
her 7-month-old cousin, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.Curtis
Odom was booked into county jail in Martinez on one count of kidnapping
and one count of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, Lee
said. His bail has been set at $200,000.
The victim of the molestation was the 13-year-old girl, Lee said, and the victim of the kidnapping was the infant.Sheriff's
deputies were flagged down on Parker Avenue about 9:30 p.m. by the
infant's parents, who told them that their 13-year-old niece left with
the child, purportedly to visit nearby relatives. But she never showed
up.The niece left the infant's home in the 200 block of
California Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Authorities searched the area with a
police dog but did not find anyone.A regional alert was put out,
an automated telephone message was sent to 1,300 area homes, and the
two missing girls were entered into a missing persons database. Through
relatives, detectives contacted the girl, who agreed to meet with them
in Pinole at 8:30 a.m. with the infant.Odom arrived to that
meeting as well. Lee said detectives do not know the exact relationship
between Odom and the 13-year-old girl. He is not related to her. Both
the teen and infant, who was reunited with her parents, were in good
health.Lee would not say why investigators believe the girl
picked up the infant before meeting with Odom. He said he does not know
if the molestation occurred while the girl and the infant were missing,
or earlier. The 13-year-old girl was booked into juvenile hall
for an unrelated juvenile probation violation, Lee said. Detectives
were unsure whether to recommend kidnapping charges against the
13-year-old.
