Police Swarm Media with Missing Person Reports
Parents of Missing Say Cops Must Do More

Chicago - The parents of two teenagers missing in Chicago said Sunday police need to do more to find their children. "I
think it's disgusting that all [the police] have done, for the most
part, is put out flyers," said Kim Harris, mother of a 14 year-old who
has been missing since early November. Harris and Ivory Hughes
said an unusual missing persons media blitz this weekend is a sign
police are hearing their pleas for help.
Between 4 and 7 p.m.
Saturday, Chicago Police e-mailed six missing person alerts to the
media. One alert was for a girl missing since April. Harris' daughter Christine and Hughes' 16 year-old daughter Dominique were part of that missing persons blitz. The
swarm of alerts came a day after Police Superintendent Jody Weis
promised to find out why no one told the news media that 12 year-old
Jahmeshia Connor was missing last month. Connor was found murdered two weeks later. Weis
said that there was "no excuse" for the lapse and it's not clear if
human or computer error that kept Connor's picture from getting to the
media. Ivory's said his daughter is likely a runaway, but Kim Harris does not know what to think since her child has been gone a month. "Since
November 7th, 9 a.m.," Harris said. "It's gut-wrenching when you hear
from someone that she might be in a neighborhood and you rush over
there and post poles and do things of that nature and nothing." Community activist Andrew Holmes said he has worked to keep more than a dozen missing kids on the police's radar. At
the Englewood home of Ivory Hughes, Holmes said pressure on police
helped make the missing a priority this weekend. That, in turn, got the
missing back in the news. "With all of your help, and these
pictures out on the tv -- and they should have been out in the first
place -- someone might have seen these children and recalled right
away," Holmes said. But why so many alerts all at once? Chicago Police did not have an answer Sunday. A
spokesperson for the department said it is not doing anything
differently, and the news affairs division just passes along alerts
from detectives. Wentworth area detectives would not comment on the surge in reports and referred questions back to news affairs. Back in Englewood, Kim Harris thinks Jahmeshia Conner could have been found alive if police did more sooner. She said this weekend's blast of e-mails is a sign police know that, too. "I think they're trying to correct their steps," she said. "It's not too late because it is happening now." The e-mail blast appeared to be working. By Sunday night, two of the six people reported missing were found safe. The four persons still missing were Dominique Hughes, 16; Kim Harris, 14; Luis Lopez, 14; and Keonza Phillips, 15. Anyone with information on whereabouts of these people is asked to call Chicago Police.
