-- A 12-year-old girl remains missing after apparently running away from her home around Thanksgiving Day, authorities said.

Detective Sgt. David Williamson said the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office continues to look for Miranda Nye, who appears to have packed a bag and taken off on her bicycle early in the morning Nov. 26.

Williamson said there appears to be no indication of foul play with her disappearance. An Amber Alert, which is used in cases when children are abducted or kidnapped, was not used because Nye ran away from her house, he said.

Amber Alerts often circulate vehicle information or other details that may help people and law enforcement locate child victims of abductions who are most vulnerable immediately after the abduction takes place.

Williamson said the sheriff's office has been in contact with Nye's immediate family and other relatives, but none appear to know where she may be.

Nye attended Milton Stateline Adventist School for a while, but had most recently been home-schooled, Williamson said.

Nye has dark brown hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen near her home along Crisp Lane, near Ferndale Road outside Milton-Freewater.

Anyone who may have seen Miranda or has any information should call Umatilla County dispatch at 541-966-3651.

Umatilla
County Sheriff's Office investigators, working with College Place
Police found a girl who has been missing from Milton-Freewater since
Nov. 26.

Sheriff John Trumbo said they found Miranda Nye, 12, at
about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Trumbo wasn't sure of the details, but believed
the girl had been "hiding out" in College Place, Wash., just over the
border from where the girl lives in the Ferndale area just outside of
Milton-Freewater.

Umatilla County Det. Rhiana Sheridan headed up
the investigation, and was assisted by Umatilla County Sgt. Dave
Williamson and Oregon State Police Det. Mark Banks.

Working
with the local police department, Sheridan and others got a search
warrant and searched the house. At 2:30 p.m., Trumbo said his
investigators had just called, saying Miranda had been found.

"We've
been working on this case full-time from the time we've been
notified,"?Trumbo said. "We finally developed information yesterday she
was in College Place."

Investigators believed Miranda packed a
bag and left home on a bicycle early in the morning on Thanksgiving
Day. Trumbo said in a previous interview he believed Miranda was a
runaway, as she'd taken off to stay with relatives or friends in the
past. But this time, she wasn't so easy to find. She was missing for a
total of 21 days.

The search for 12-year-old Miranda Nye of Milton-Freewater is over, but serious questions remain.

College
Place police and Walla Walla County sheriff's deputies found her
Wednesday at a house in College Place. After finding her, Washington
officials called the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office, which has been
looking for her since her disappearance 22 days ago, said Detective
Rhiana Sheridan of the sheriff's office.

Sheridan was reluctant to say much more.

"The most I can verify is, she has been recovered, she is safe," Sheridan said. "We're still investigating."

Umatilla
County Sheriff John Trumbo said the investigation has to answer two key
questions: Why did the girl leave her home and why did the College
Place family conceal her.

"We'll get to the root of it eventually," Trumbo said.

Trumbo
said the whole situation seems shady. The case now seems to indicate an
extended family member gave the girl a ride to College Place to hide
her, and after her story hit newspaper front pages, the family member
took her to another family. That family also seemed to know the child
was missing.

Trumbo said he wasn't familiar with Washington
law, so he didn't know what criminal charges the family could face
there. He also speculated this could involve federal authorities
because someone took a minor across state lines.

Miranda's mother, Sarah Nye, said she felt relieved her daughter had been found, but also upset with the investigators.

The
sheriff's office and College Place police served a search warrant at
1:30 p.m. Trumbo also said while police determined in the morning the
child was staying at the house, it took time to put together a search
warrant, get a judge to sign it and then get police together to do the
search.

"That takes time if they're going to do it right," he said.

Trumbo began telling media the girl was found Wednesday afternoon. But Nye didn't find out officially until Wednesday evening.

"Nobody said anything to us all day - all day," Nye said. "We had to find out through the grapevine."

She
said friends began calling her Wednesday afternoon. Though she was
hopeful, Nye said she was reluctant to believe anything until she heard
from officials. Nye tried to call the sheriff's office, she said, and
eventually called College Place police. The police confirmed officers
had found Miranda, but had little else to say. She met with Umatilla
County detectives Wednesday evening.

Sheridan said it was a
miscommunication between College Place Police, herself and Trumbo. The
sheriff's office didn't find out where Miranda was until the afternoon.
Then as Sheridan was interviewing people at the house in College Place,
the information leaked out. She called Trumbo to let him know they'd
found Miranda and he began notifying media before Sheridan had a chance
to call the girl's mother.

"She was upset and honestly I don't blame her," Sheridan said.

As
of Wednesday night, Miranda was still in the custody of Washington
child protective services, Trumbo said, and likely that agency would
determine if and when to return the girl. Nye said she hopes to have
her daughter back sometime today.

Sheridan said the
investigation is ongoing and involved "allegations against a parent."
She couldn't say what kind of allegations.

However, she said the family in College Place kept Miranda for three weeks because of the allegations.

"It's
possibly related to the allegations and that the people she was with
believed her," Sheridan said. "They felt they were doing what was right
by keeping her safe. They felt they were keeping her safe."

Nye
and Sheridan confirmed Trumbo's earlier assertions Miranda was a
runaway. Miranda has been missing since Thanksgiving Day, when she
packed a bag and left home on her bicycle.

Nye said this is the
third time Miranda ran away. In previous incidents, Miranda ran after
she thought she had done something bad or gotten into trouble, her
mother said.

Sheridan didn't say if Miranda had been staying
with friends or family, but only said she knew the people she was found
with. The College Place Police Department had been completing another
investigation, Sheridan said, and found Miranda. The department then
contacted Umatilla County.

"It wasn't initially related, but they got information she would be there," Sheridan said.
