THOMAS JOHN HOPE - Infant (2010) Yaphank/Long Island NY
Yaphank, NY --
Homicide detectives on Long Island are investigating the discovery of an infant's remains at a trash recycling center.
Suffolk County police say they were called to a recycling transfer station in Yaphank shortly after 9 a.m. Monday. Yapank is about 60 miles east of Manhattan. Detectives have yet to determine the race, age or gender of the infant.
The body was found by an employee of Winters Brothers, which operates
the facility. Police say the center takes in refuse from both
residential and commercial customers. A Winters Brothers spokeswoman did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

Autopsy: Infant at Long Island Trash Center was Full-Term Boy
YAPHANK, N.Y. (AP) -- An autopsy has determined that remains found at a Long Island trash recycling center were that of a full-term baby boy.
Suffolk County police were called to a recycling transfer station in Yaphank shortly after 9 a.m. Monday. An employee of Winters Brothers, which operates the facility, discovered the infant wrapped inside a baled up collection of trash.
Detectives said Wednesday they are now trying to determine where and when the child's body may have been dumped. Police say the center takes in refuse from both residential and commercial customers around Long Island.
Yaphank is about 60 miles east of Manhattan.
The child is expected to be buried by a group of volunteers that cares for abandoned infants.

The infant found dead at a Yaphank garbage transfer facility will be buried with the name Thomas Hope, said the official who is arranging the burial.
The name for the baby boy, whose parents are unknown, was chosen by the recycling worker who found the body and his co-workers, said Timothy Jaccard of AMT Children of Hope Foundation.
The name honors a late co-worker at the Winter Brothers...

One year later: The legacy of Thomas John Hope

It was one year ago today that Thomas John Hope’s frozen body was found crushed underneath garbage at a recycling plant in Yaphank.
A worker at the Winter Brothers transfer station on Old Dock Road — a warehouse where refuse from around Suffolk is collected, sorted and compressed — spotted the dead child’s limbs sticking up from a compressed block of garbage loaded on a truck.
Where he came from and how exactly he got to the facility remains a mystery.
But there is one thing people familiar with the story of Thomas John Hope — a name given to him by the man who found him and the volunteer group who buried him — know about the infant: His legacy is in the lives of a dozen babies saved since his body was discovered a year ago....
