Rock Hill man pleads guilty in infant's death
Rock Hill father gets 16 years for involuntary manslaughter of his 3-month-old daughter

A Rock Hill man was sentenced to 16 years in prison and 4 years' probation on charges related to the January 2010 death of his infant daughter.
Curtis Randall Sweatt Jr., 28, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and inflicting serious bodily injury to a child Friday, according to a release from 16th Circuit Solicitor Kevin Brackett's office.
Authorities responded to a 911 call at Sweatt's home on Jan. 7, 2010. EMS took his 3-month-old daughter, Savannah Sweatt, who was unresponsive, to Piedmont Medical Center.

She was then flown to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte by helicopter and died the morning of Jan. 8, said Deputy Solicitor Willy Thompson.
In court, Sweatt acknowledged his responsibility in the death of his daughter but said it was not intentional and resulted from him accidentally dropping her and then aggressively rocking her after picking her back up, the release said.
According to the release, Sweatt initially told investigators that the baby awoke with a dirty diaper, and he gave her a bath. While toweling her dry, "he pulled the towel from under her and heard her neck 'snap,'" at which point she began seizing.
He denied dropping her or shaking her at the time, the release stated.
Thompson, who prosecuted the case, argued that the medical evidence indicated the baby's injuries were more severe than what Sweatt described would have caused.
Medical reports repeatedly described Savannah's injuries as "severe, massive and devastating," the release stated.
Severe brain injuries "comparable to the sudden impact of a car wreck" caused her death, according to an autopsy report, the release said.
"I don't think Curtis Sweatt - or any parent - none of them get up in the morning saying, 'I'm going to kill my infant child,'" Thompson said. "They get to the point where they get completely frustrated, and they make a decision that's just horrible.
"He (Sweatt), with that one act, destroyed a lot of lives."
