KIARA SMITH - 13 months (2009) - Williamstown KY

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. -- A Grant County jury found Douglas Barnhill guilty
of wanton murder Friday in the death last year of a 13-month-old girl
he was babysitting.

Barnhill, 24, of Crittenden was sentenced to
life in prison in Grant County Circuit Court for the death which the
medical examiner said was the result of blows to the Kiara Smith’s head.

Barnhill
was babysitting his 17-year-old girlfriend’s child while the mother
attended a family funeral when the child was injured. According to
authorities, Barnhill called 911 and said that the child had fallen and
struck here head at his residence.

Investigators determined the child’s injuries were not consistent with the statements made by Barnhill.
