The mother of a teenage boy molested by a sexual predator is speaking out tonight.
We are not naming her or showing her face in order to protect her son's identity.
"It's a parent's worst nightmare, I'd say, and all you can do is tell him, it's not your fault," she said.
She says her 13 year old son was dragged into a backyard shed, molested and
told to keep quiet and she wonders what could have happened to him and
other children in the neighborhood if he had.
"How many more, if any, has not come forward? That's what really disturbs
me. Thank God my son had the courage to tell mommy," she said.
64 year old Sharyon Sanders, who goes by Ron, was arrested Sunday and
accused of kidnapping, molestation and more for assaulting the boy
behind his home on Pepper Drive.
The registered sex predator who was released from prison in June moved into
this house in November, according to DOC records. He lived here along
with two other sexual predators who he met at a ministry one street
over.
"They feel like outcasts in the first place and when one of the guys who was here does
something like that, that just unnerves them," said Glenn Burns,
director of CARE Tallahassee on Eppes Drive.
CARE ministry is the first stop for men coming out of prison and according
to its director, the only faith based re-entry program in the state
that accepts sex offenders. It offers counseling, help finding jobs and
transporation and requires men to attend church services and abide by a
curfew.
According to FDLE records, 28 of the men who live at CARE are sex offenders. And when
they leave here, the director says, many of them do move into homes
together.
"It's a very sophisticated problem. It's not as easy as just don't let them come in
this area. They have to live somewhere. If they've done their time, we
have to work with them as opposed to just ignore them." Burns said.
According to authorities, Sanders was properly monitored, followed all the
reporting rules and his Pepper Drive home meets all the requirements
designed to keep sex offenders a thousand feet away or more from
schools and day cares.
Yet the mother of the teen assaulted points out that elementary kids walk
to school along this road and there's a middle school bus stop two
doors down. She simply cannot accept that it's okay to have one sexual
predator, much less three, living in the midst of all these children.
"I feel like these kind of people should be moved into a rural area
instead of an area with children. No matter where we are. This
shouldn't have happened at all," she said.
Sanders is being held in the Leon County Jail without bond until trial.
DOC case notes released today show there were toys found in Sanders' home,
sex toys found in his room, and some video tapes found in his roomate's
room, which are now being reviewed.
