A North Philadelphia man was arrested today and charged with murder,
accused of killing a 20-month-old toddler with Drano drain cleaner.
Aaron Pace, 33, was babysitting Suliaman Orrell Kirkland on Feb. 2 when
he doused a rag with Drano and rubbed it into the child's skin, police
said.At the time, several of Pace's relatives were in the house, on 4500
block of N. 18th Street, but did not witness the incident, said
Homicide Lt. Philip Riehl. When they discovered the injured boy, one of
them called the child's mother. The child's mother called for medical
help, Riehl said. Rescue workers and police arrived on the 4500 block of N. 18th Street
and found the boy suffering from severe chemical burns to his upper
extremities, Riehl said. The child was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital
for Children in critical condition. On Sunday, he died of his injuries.
Pace, who was being held tonight at Police Headquarters, often referred to himself
as the boy's godfather, Riehl said. "Why did he do it? Because the child, in the defendant's view, was
uncooperative and crying, doing what 20-month-old children do," Riehl said.

PHILADELPHIA, May 12 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia man will stand trial for murder for allegedly rubbing caustic drain cleaner on a child because the toddler was "fussing," authorities said.

Aaron Pace, 34, who babysat neighborhood children in the Logan area of the city, faces murder and child endangerment charges for allegedly putting Drano crystals on a washcloth and rubbing 20-month-old Suliaman Orrell Kirkland until the boy's skin came off, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.

Pace told detectives he lost his temper because the boy was "fussing and crying" in the bathtub.

The child died Feb. 7 at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children five days after the alleged assault, the newspaper said.

After a judge ordered Pace to stand trial, the child's grandmother Renee Kirkland Hinton said she was satisfied he would be tried for first-degree murder.

"I don't want the death penalty," Renee Kirkland Hinton said. "I want him to spend life in prison thinking about what he did."

Logan, PA – A 34-year-old Logan man will stand trial on murder charges for rubbing a 20-month-old boy with Drano crystals because he was “fussing and crying” during a bath, as reported by the Philadelphia Enquirer. The decision comes after a preliminary hearing decision that came on Tuesday, May 11, 2010.
Aaron Pace, of Logan, will face first-degree murder and child endangerment charges. First-degree murder charges were decided upon after gruesome autopsy pictures of the little boy, Suliaman Orrell Kirkland, were shown to the court. A prosecutor pointed out the severity of the baby’s wounds and the fact that Pace deliberately avoided burning himself.
The judge for the preliminary hearing agreed with the charges, stating that because Pace lied about the incident, the boy was not treated for chemical burns and suffered a slow and painful death over the span of five days.
Pace was reportedly close with the family and referred to Suliaman as his godson. He referred to the boy’s mother, Quintesha Kirkland, 27, as his sister.
An officer testified during the hearing that she visited the hospital after receiving reports of child assault on February 2. She reported the boy had burns covering his head and torso and was screaming in pain.
Pace had told authorities that the boy was burned from the bath water. Five days later, the boy was dead.
On February 7, Homicide Detective Jack Cummings confronted Pace about his story. The boy suffered no burns on his legs or buttocks, meaning the burns could not have been the result of scalding hot bath water.
Pace confessed in the end, admitting that he lost his temper over the boy’s crying. He admitted to putting Drano crystals on a washcloth and rubbing the boy until his skin began sloughing off.
According to reports, Pace told the detective that he was “patting him and telling him I didn’t mean to hurt him.”
Pace was arrested in 1996 for attempted rape. While those charges were dropped before he was convicted, court documents show that he was convicted of sexual assault as a juvenile.

Lets bath him with Drano. We could borrow some Henkel duct tape from Casey, tape a funnel in his mouth and pour it down his sorry mouth.

That might kill him too quickly. I say rub it on a section of his body each day until he melts away in searing pain. But keep the duct tape on his mouth for sure.

Pace was a family friend, described in court as “like family,” who has admitted he got mad and grabbed a container of drain-cleaning crystals and rubbed them over the boy’s body with a rag.

The result has left even veteran first-responders affected to this day, and the family is of course devastated.

The defendant, described by his defense attorney as “low functioning” with a low IQ, said he was sorry and was taking responsibility for his actions.

Pace has been sentenced to 17½ to 35 years in prison.
