Unidentified Newborn "Baby John Francis" - (2010) - College Park/Atlanta GA
A newborn baby found Thursday afternoon outside a College Park church died at the hospital, police said. The baby boy, found outside St. John's Episcopal Church, died early Thursday evening, authorities said.Just
before 4 p.m., police were called to the church at 3480 Main Street.
The church caretaker there discovered the child alive, College Park
police spokesman Lt. Reed Pollard said. The church sexton, or caretaker, discovered the baby in a garden next to the church parking lot, said music director Tom Elston."He brought the baby in, and we took care of him until the ambulance came," Elston said. The infant was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston in Decatur, Pollard said.Police are trying to determine who left the baby, he said."We
are trying to find the mother, for her welfare at this time," Reed
said. "She may need medical treatment and we are trying to get her that
treatment."The case is under investigation, and it is unclear whether charges would be filed against the mother.Abandoning
a child is a misdemeanor in Georgia. However, safe haven laws allow for
children to be left at hospitals, fire stations or police stations
without criminalizing the parent.

A newborn abandoned at St. John's Episcopal Church in College Park church may be buried there. The child, named John for the church, died Thursday at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston in Decatur. The
baby will be memorialized Sunday at 2 p.m. at the church on Main Street
in College Park. The church has also asked the Fulton County Medical
Examiner's Office if they can bury the child in St. John’s garden if
he is not claimed. Father Troy Beecham said church members want to give
“him a proper burial.”Baby John was only a few hours old when he was found naked in the corner of a church garden gazebo. It was cold Thursday, and there was nothing keeping him warm.A caretaker spotted a towel on a bench inside the gazebo Thursday afternoon and then he saw the newborn in the corner.Baby John was alive but barely.“I
have no context for understanding this,” Beecham told reporters Friday. "I certainly have no answers. I’m left
with a broken heart.”Beecham said he is struggling to come up with the words to say about the child at the service.“I’m
at a loss for words,” the priest said. “I have no way of understanding
what kind of desperation a parent would have to feel. We don’t know the
baby’s ethnicity, the family’s religion. We don’t know anything about
him except he’s a boy.”Abandoning a child is a misdemeanor in
Georgia. But the state’s safe haven law allow for newborns to be left
at hospitals, fire stations or police stations without criminalizing
the parent. The police are investigating“I don’t know if this
was some young girl who brought him here because she didn’t know what
to do,” Beecham said, adding he is troubled that the person who left
the child didn’t at least ring the bell at the church door.“We still haven’t figured out how to deal with generational poverty,” Beecham said. "I’m stunned this can still happen.”
