"Newborn Baby Doe" - (2010) Aurora (SE of Cleveland) OH
Police are investigating potential criminal charges
against an Aurora teen whose newborn son was found dead inside her home
while she was seeking medical treatment.
The 16-year-old still possessed the
infant's placenta when she and her father went Sunday morning to
Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, police said.
Once medical staff determined she had
given birth that same morning, Aurora police were contacted and officers
went to the family's North Aurora Road home.
The full-term newborn was found dead. A cause and manner of death are pending.
The infant's body was taken to the Summit
County Medical Examiner's Office. Tissue, organ and other samples were
extracted for testing, which could take three to four weeks to conclude.
Aurora police would not release an
incident report on the death nor would they disclose the address or the
names of the teen and her father.
''It's a very emotional situation for the
family and some people in the city that knew her,'' said police Lt. Rob
Hagquist. ''We're trying to be very delicate with our approach to this
and we want to do the right thing and a proper investigation is going to
be part of that.''
Hagquist said he would not disclose if
the teen's family had been aware of her pregnancy. The girl was
interviewed by police at the hospital. She has no other children.
He did not know if the teen remained hospitalized.
''We're going to treat it as a criminal investigation and wherever it leads, it leads,'' he said.
Police intend to gather evidence, reports
and statements and present the findings to Portage County prosecutors.
''That will give us an opinion of whether criminal charges are necessary or not,'' Hagquist said.
The investigation will take several weeks.
''It's been a very tragic situation
that's going to take a lot of sorting out before we can come up with a
real answer to what occurred that day,'' he said.
