Authorities investigating the death of a 2-year-old Northwest Side
boy are looking at the mother's boyfriend, who has a history of child
abuse allegations.Salvador Sanchez was found unresponsive early
Friday at a home in the 6000 block of West Melrose Street, police said.
On Saturday, the boy's death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy
that showed he died of multiple injuries and blunt trauma from abuse,
the Cook County medical examiner's office said. The Illinois
Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the
possibility that the boyfriend of Salvador's mother abused the boy,
said agency spokesman Kendall Marlowe.Although the child welfare
agency had no prior contact with Salvador's mother's family, it did
have "prior indicated allegations of abuse" against the boyfriend in
two other cases involving the children of girlfriends in 2002 and in
2005, Marlowe said.In 2002, the man's own child died, but there were no allegations
that the death was caused by abuse, Marlowe said.Chicago police are investigating the case as a homicide.

The
boyfriend of a 2-year-old boy's mother is being investigated in the
child's death, which was ruled a homicide today by the Cook County
medical examiner's office, authorities said.
Salvador Sanchez was found unresponsive at a home in the 6000 block
of West Melrose Street and emergency medical personnel and police were
called there at 5:50 a.m. Friday, said Chicago
Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien. Salvador was declared dead
at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center at 6:19 a.m., according
to the office.
Following an autopsy today, the medical examiner's office ruled
Salvador's death a homicide from multiple injuries, blunt trauma from
child abuse. The medical examiner's office said Salvador's home address
was in the 5700 block of West Melrose Street.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is
investigating the possibility that the boyfriend of Salvador's mother
may have caused the boy's death by abuse, said DCFS spokesman Kendall
Marlowe.
Although
DCFS has had no prior contact with Salvador's mother's family, "we have
had prior indicated allegations of abuse" against the boyfriend in two
other cases involving the children of girlfriends, once in 2002 and
again in 2005, Marlowe said.
In 2002, the man's own child died, but there were no allegations at
that time that the death was caused by abuse, and DCFS provided other
services to the family, Marlowe said.
Grand-Central Area detectives are investigating the case as a homicide.
DCFS officials have been seeing an increasing number of abuse cases
in recent years involving boyfriends or girlfriends -- often termed
"paramours" -- who abuse the children of multiple partners over a
period of years, Marlowe said.
"We have seen an increasing number of paramour cases in recent
years," Marlowe said. "Parents need to make safe, smart decisions in
choosing who cares for their children, and we need to strengthen and
support families to help them make those better decisions."

Man charged in murder of 2-year-old boy on the Northwest Side
February 21st, 2010 5:37 pm CT
A Chicago man who has reportedly been investigated in the past for alleged abuse is charged tonight in the death of 2-year-old boy on the Northwest Side.
Jesus Rico, 29, is charged with first degree murder in the death of Salvador Sanchez.
At 5:50 a.m. Friday morning, police and emergency crews responded to a call of an unconscious child at a home on the 6000 block of West Melrose, according to police news affairs.
The child, Salvador, was taken to a hospital and died a short time later. The medical examiner's office determined the child died of multiple injuries and blunt trauma caused by child abuse.
Police would not confirm Rico's relationship to the child but both the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times reports Rico was the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother.
The Chicago Sun-Times also reports the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services had previously investigated Rico for alleged abuse in 2002 and 2005. Both those investigations reportedly involved different families.
DCFS says it also provided services to Rico following the death of his own child in 2002. DCFS spokesman Kenneth Marlowe tells the Times, "There was no allegation of abuse or neglect concerning this death reported at that time."
