Investigators have charged a Miramar Marine after the death of his 4-month-old son.
Michael Bixby was arrested in connection with the case at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday
by San Diego Police homicide detectives.
Police said he is accused of the murder of his infant son.
Medical examiners said that "blunt force head trauma" killed the child of the Marine,
who is stationed at Marine Corps Airs Station Miramar.
Andru Bixby died Thursday morning at Children's Hospital,
about 14 hours after his 22-year-old father called 911 to report
that Andru had stopped breathing. Andru's mother had been
watching him and his 18-month-old
brother before leaving for school when Michael came home.
Michael was questioned after he first reported the child's injuries, but he was
initially released pending the outcome of the investigation.

SAN DIEGO - A Miramar-based Marine was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder in the death of his infant child.
Michael
Bixby, 22, was arrested shortly after noon at San Diego police
headquarters, where he went for follow-up questioning about the death
of his 4- month-old son, Andru, SDPD homicide Lt. Ernie Herbert said.
Medics
responding to an emergency call from a military housing unit at the
northern San Diego USMC station found the baby unresponsive about 7:40
p.m. Wednesday.
"CPR was initially started by the infant's father," Herbert said.
The baby was taken to Children's Hospital, where he died the next morning.
"Initially,
child-abuse detectives were called to the hospital when doctors
discovered the infant had unexplained injuries," Herbert said. "The
preliminary investigation revealed the injuries were life-threatening,
and homicide detectives assumed the investigation."
An autopsy determined that the infant died of blunt-force head injuries, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.
Police questioned the child's father last week, then released him pending further investigation, according to Herbert.

Marine pleads not guilty in son’s death

OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Upset that his infant son’s cries interrupted his video game playing, a 22-year-old Marine grabbed the 4-month-old boy and shook the infant hard enough to injure the baby’s brain, eyes and spinal column, a San Diego prosecutor alleged in court Thursday. The infant died the following day.
Two days after being arrested by San Diego police, Lance Cpl. Michael D. Bixby pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on charges of child endangerment and child abuse causing death — criminal charges that could get him a 25-to-life sentence if he is convicted.
A San Diego County Superior Court judge ordered Bixby be held on $1 million bail, and he remained in custody at the central city jail. Bixby, who is stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, will return to court March 10 for a preliminary hearing.
Bixby was in his home, located at the air station, and was playing video games about 7 p.m. Feb. 17 when 4-month-old Andru, who was in a child carrier on the floor, began to cry.
“He grabbed him by the wrist and shook him,” Deputy District Attorney Leonard Trinh said. “Andru’s head snapped forward, and he stopped crying.”
Bixby, whose wife was at a class at the time, was also watching their older son, Taylor, 22 months, who was upstairs.
Bixby tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Andru Bixby but did not call 911, Trinh said. When his wife returned home about 45 minutes later, “she had an emotional reaction to Andru’s medical condition,” he said. Neighbors heard a commotion and called 911, and a short time later military police and San Diego police arrived at the home. The infant was taken to Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where he died.
Andru suffered a fractured wrist and injuries to his spinal cord, optical nerve and brain, Trinh said.
Bixby, of Washington County, Ore., is a packaging specialist assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16, Miramar officials said. He joined the Corps on Feb. 1, 2009, and earned the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Marine Guilty Of Shaking Baby To Death Sentenced
Michael Bixby, 23, Sentenced To 20 Years In State Prison

SAN DIEGO -- A Miramar-based Marine who fatally shook his 4-month-old son because the baby was crying while he was trying to play video games was sentenced Monday to 20 years in state prison.
Michael David Bixby, 23, pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter and two counts of child abuse causing great bodily injury.
Deputy District Attorney Tracy Prior said Bixby committed the "ultimate betrayal" on his infant son, 4-month-old Andru Bixby.
Prior, calling the killing "senseless and selfish," gave the defendant credit for stepping up and telling authorities what he had done.
Last Feb. 17, the defendant grabbed the victim from his baby carrier and twisted his right arm, breaking it. Bixby then shook the infant so hard that it caused fatal brain and spinal cord injuries, Prior said.
The baby was taken to a hospital, but died the next morning.
The defendant's 2-year-old son, Taeleor, was upstairs while his younger brother was being attacked, the prosecutor said.
The children's mother, Stephanie Bixby, wrote a letter to the court, saying her husband broke his promise to keep their children safe.
"I believed you, I trusted you and stood by you through thick and thin," she wrote. "I loved you and you didn't just betray my trust, you betrayed our sons and our vows.
"A mother should never outlive her children, let alone watch them let go. I should hate you for what you did to those boys. I hope you get what's coming for you."
Stephanie Bixby was at school when her husband fatally injured Andru, according to Prior.
Defense attorney Kathleen Coyne said her client was "remorseful and regretful" of what happened and was "extremely young" with no experience handling children when he attacked his son.
Bixby was also feeling stress from his impending deployment when he killed the child, Coyne said.
