San Diego police Wednesday sought a 4-year-old Chollas View girl
reported missing by her mother when the child’s uncle failed to bring
her home.
The uncle, De’Angelo Mitchell, 44, picked up Monique Williams at a
Holly Drive day care center near Euclid Avenue in Lincoln Park Tuesday
afternoon, and the pair have not been seen since, Detective Gary Hassen
of media relations said.
He was driving a white Chevrolet van with California license
6DFS595, police said. The girl’s mother called police about 1 a.m. to
report Monique missing, he said.
Day care workers told police they let Monique leave with her uncle
about 4 p.m., Hassen said, adding that he is on a list of people
authorized to pick her up.
Monique was described as black, her shoulder-length hair braided
with beads. She was wearing a blouse with a blue collar, blue Dickies
pants and multi-colored shoes, police said.
Mitchell is black, about 5 feet 9 inches and 160 pounds; he was
wearing a blue or gray shirt, jeans and steel-toed boots, police said.
Police kept a lookout for the girl overnight and checked hospitals,
border law enforcement and other police agencies in the area, but found
no trace of Monique or Mitchell, Hassen said.

SAN DIEGO — A man suspected of possibly kidnapping his 5-year-old
niece has been taken into custody by police at Adams Avenue Park in
Normal Heights, and the girl was found with him unharmed, authorities
said.
A police officer found the van the man was believed to have been
driving parked at Adams Avenue and Bancroft Street about noon, and
officers who combed the area later found the pair at the park.
De’Angelo Mitchell was taken into custody without incident and was being questioned by detectives.
“At this point it’s not clear what happened,” said San Diego
Assistant Police Chief Boyd Long. “The most important thing to us is
that she’s safe.”
Mitchell had picked up his niece at a day care center about 4 p.m. Tuesday, which he was authorized to do, police said.
When they didn’t return home, the child’s mother called police
shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday and reported that her daughter was
missing.
Police talked with Mitchell about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday but the girl
had not been seen, San Diego police spokesman Gary Hassen said.
An Amber Alert was issued for the girl and police set up a command
post on Tremont Street near 44th Street in Chollas View, which is near
where the child lives. The van was possibly stolen from the girl’s
mother or grandmother, police said.
The girl will be further examined for injuries.
