A 24-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night in the Feb. 6 death of a
2-year-old Sparks boy, who was the son of the suspect’s fiance, Sparks
police said Thursday.
Kevin Anthony Hunt, address unknown, was booked on charges of suspicion
of murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm on the death
of Malakai Dean, police said.
An initial police investigation determined that Malakai might have
been playing on or around the playground at Deer Park on Feb. 5. Later
that day, the boy stopped breathing at his home on Round Mountain
Circle and died early the next day at Northern Nevada Medical Center.“The
facts and circumstances substantiate that he did not suffer this injury
in an accident or mishap,” police said in a statement Thursday.
“Additionally, the facts and circumstances (substantiate) that Malakai
was in the sole care and custody of Kevin Anthony Hunt when he suffered
the injury that lead to his death.” Detectives reported they have no evidence Hunt took Malakai to Deer Park.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Hunt on Wednesday.
Detectives
with the Northern Nevada Repeat Offender Program found him and started
surveillance about 6:30 p.m., Sparks police said. Hunt
was taken into custody without incident about 8 p.m. as part of a
traffic stop in the area of U.S. 395 and South Virginia Street, police
said.
Hunt could not be reached for comment Thursday. He was being held Washoe County Jail.Malakai’s mother is five months pregnant with Hunt’s child.

Man arrested in death of 2-year-old boy

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) -- Sparks police have arrested a man in the beating death of a 2-year-old boy earlier this month.
Police say 24-year-old Kevin Anthony Hunt is the boyfriend of the child's mother.
Hunt was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm in the Feb. 5 death of Malakai Dean.
Police have said Hunt took Dean to a Sparks park and that the child stopped breathing at his home later that day from injuries that were originally blamed on a fall on a slide.
Police say they determined that the boy died of major blunt force trauma and they allege the child was in Hunt's care when he suffered the injury that caused his death.
A phone listing for Hunt couldn't be found and the Washoe County jail doesn't take messages for inmates.

Child Murder and Now Stalking
4:21 pm, Jul 28, 2012 | Written by admin
Two weeks after a 25-year-old man was freed on bail after jurors couldn’t decide his guilt on charges that he murdered his pregnant former fiancee’s toddler, he was back in jail accused of stalking the boy’s mother.
Kevin Anthony Hunt was arrested July 16 by Sparks police who allege he was stalking Kanesia Dean. She gave birth to their child in May 2010 while Hunt remained jailed on suspicion of killing her 2-year-old son, Malakai Dean. The boy died about four months earlier in Sparks.
A Washoe County district judge on May 29th declared a mistrial for Hunt because jurors were hung on murder and child abuse charges. The trial went three weeks, and jury deliberations lasted two days.
The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office is taking Hunt back to trial, but a new date has not yet been set.
During a Friday hearing, Washoe District Judge Steven Kosach relieved Dave Houston as Hunt’s attorney in the murder case. Houston is a private attorney in Reno who has represented celebrities and defendants in high profile cases.
Kosach said a public defender will be appointed for Hunt, who is due back in court in October for a status hearing on the case. In court papers filed on May 31 seeking a reduced bail, Houston said Hunt’s family drew upon their savings and other financial resources to pay him.
Hunt remains accused of inflicting fatal injuries on Malakai during a 20-minute window in February 2010 when the pair were alone. A medical examiner testified at trial that the injuries to the boy’s intestines were similar to those suffered in multi-story falls or during high impact car crashes. Malakai died after receiving “blunt force trauma,” which caused his organs to bleed out into his abdomen, according to his autopsy report. His injuries were fresh, it said.
Hunt’s defense was that Malakai ultimately died of a blood clot that started before he and the boy were alone. Hunt claimed the life-saving efforts performed by the boy’s grandmother caused his internal injuries. Hunt has denied ever abusing the child.
A fellow jail inmate testified that Hunt told him he “punched the baby in the stomach” while they were riding in the car. Michael Brown said Hunt told him the boy didn’t die right away. Malakai died several hours after they were alone. Officials said he immediately displayed symptoms of his injuries that included constant vomiting and lethargy.
Prior to being alone with Hunt, authorities and Malakai’s family said he was happy, running around and playing.
Soon after the toddler’s death, Kanesia Dean was granted a protection order against Hunt. Records show the order was recently extended following his latest arrest.
Authorities said Hunt’s alleged stalking included calling Kanesia Dean following his jail release on July 2. He was arrested two weeks later in a Sparks shopping center parking lot after police said he arranged to meet her there. Records show that on July 13 Hunt had filed for visitation and custody rights to their child. A trial on the stalking charge is scheduled for later this summer in Sparks Municipal Court.
Hunt’s bail is now $500,000 cash only on the outstanding charges related to Malakai’s killing, records show. He had been released July 2 on $25,000 bail after Kosach reduced it from no bail. The bail increase was due to the stalking arrest.
But before Kosach had granted bail, prosecutor Luke Prengaman said in court documents that any money Hunt had access to should be given back to the county, and not used toward bail. He said that despite Hunt’s family paying for an “expensive” attorney, that Kosach approved public funds to be used to pay some of Hunt’s defense costs during trial. Those proceedings, he said, were “ex-parte” where the prosecutor is not involved. The documents related to granting public funds for Hunt’s defense are sealed. The exact toll to taxpayers and the county is unknown.
Prengaman said in documents that Hunt swore in an affidavit following his arrest that he was indigent. Hunt also said in the affidavit his family and friends could not financially assist him. But Prengaman said that recorded jail calls following Hunt’s arrest show that he told a relative to lie to his parents about his $9,000 bank account, and that he also worried it would be used to garnish child support for his children who live on the East Coast.
The prosecutor asked that the approval of public funds be revisited in light of Hunt’s ability to post bail. Houston said in court documents that the prosecutor is not authorized to “participate in payments of indigent defense no greater and no less than the other 422,527 residents of Washoe County.” He added that costs to the county could be reduced if the prosecutor withdrew his opposition to Hunt’s bail, which would allow Hunt to “resume life as a productive citizen.”
No ruling has been made on Prengaman’s request.
Houston had defended the prosecutor’s opposition to bail in court documents saying Hunt’s legal expenses were not related to his right to a reasonable bail. He said the system of government does not allow the state or private parties to levy the assets of friends and family to pay a defendant’s personal debts. The attorney added that bail would allow Hunt to work and financially contribute to his defense.
“None of the expense to the county, of which the prosecutor has frequently complained, would have been incurred were it not for the state’s decision to prosecute Mr. Hunt,” Houston wrote.
Prengaman said in court papers that the “apparent probability of conviction is high.”
At the time of Hunt’s arrest, he was a U.S. Marine stationed in California. According to court records, Kanesia Dean became pregnant soon after the couple began dating. Hunt visited her on the weekends at her Sparks home which she shared with several relatives.
