The McCray Twins - 16 months and 10 pounds - Sumter SC
A judge has found a Sumter County couple guilty of homicide by child abuse.
Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary since Sumter police uncovered
the case, one they call the worst cases of child abuse they've ever
seen.
Kevin Isaac and Marketta McCray plead gulty to starving one of their twins to death.
McCray defended her parenting skills to the judge.
"I fed them," said McCray. "They're trying to make it sound like I
didn't feed them. My kids ate, they ate and every time somebody was
eating something, they wanted something. I mean, they wasn't lacking
any meals. They wasn't missing any meals."
The babies father didn't offer a reason, just regret.
"First and foremost, I want to apologize for this tragic situation,"
said Isaac. "Me as a man, father, never thought I would experience
sheer pain of losing my own son, losing my family and losing basically
everything I stood for."
Detective Irene Culick worked the scene. She says five kids lived in
the home, but for some reason, the twins were being starved. Both
weighed under 10 pounds at 16 months of age. One twin was barely alive
and the other was dead.
"You could see every rib in his stomach was sunken in all the way,"
said Culick "You could see his hip bone, there was no fat on his face,
no fat on his behind. I've never seen a child like that."
Even the man paid to represent McCray couldn't explain it.
"I was hoping, your honor, she was on drugs, something to truly
believe she loved the children," said the lawyer. "But the actions were
just the opposite of love."
Isaac got 25 years while McCray got 29. Their four kids are in foster care.
Now a family who used to live together, will spend the next few decades apart.
