TUSCALOOSA | Autopsy results show that a 2-month-old girl who was killed in February died from blunt force trauma.
The head injuries that the baby sustained were intentionally inflicted and her death has been ruled a
homicide, said Capt. Loyd Baker of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit.
Baker did not release the infant's name. No arrests have been made.
“We're trying to determine who caused the injuries,” he said.
Baker did not release information about the baby's death until Thursday, when a letter arrived from the Department of Forensic Sciences ruling the death a homicide.
“We've been treating this as a potential criminal matter since the onset of the case,” he said.
Family members took the baby to DCH Regional Medical Center on Feb. 15.
“She arrived at the hospital unresponsive and lethargic,” he said.
The infant was transferred to Children's Hospital in Birmingham, where she died on Feb. 26. Workers with the Alabama Department of Human Resources contacted Tuscaloosa police to inform them of the suspicious injuries, he said. The girl lived with her family in Tuscaloosa.
He said that the injuries did not indicate a pattern of abuse. It was unclear what was used to cause the injuries, he said.
