"Infant Jane" BORST - 13 months - Clifton Springs NY
What police say she did is unimaginable. An Ontario County woman is
accused of breaking her 13-month-old daughter's leg inside her home on
Broad Street in Clifton Springs. Police say it took her two days to get
her daughter medical help.
The mother, 22-year-old
Katie Borst, is charged with second-degree assault and endangering the
welfare of a child.
The little girl has been released from
the hospital and is recovering in a foster home with her three-year-old
brother, who showed no signs of injuries. Police say doctors also found
that the little girl’s lower leg was healing from a previous break, and
state troopers are now investigating whether there is a history of
abuse.
"It's horrible," neighbor Danielle Boop said. She lives across the
street from Borst's apartment.
"I was absolutely devastated," Boop said of her reaction to the
charges. "I couldn't believe that somebody could do that to their
child."
Neighbors like Boop and Velma Seeley, who lives a few
doors down, say the charges are so terrible that it's hard to believe
them.
"It makes you sick," Seeley said. "It makes you sick."
"You always ask yourself every single time...how could somebody do
that?"
State Police Investigator Denise Michel said she became involved
after Borst took her 13-month-old daughter to Thompson Hospital in
Canandaigua on March 5th. That’s two days after police say she broke her
child's femur. Hospital officials told her to take the little girl to
Strong Hospital, where Michel interviewed Borst about the injury.
"The femur is, as you know, one of the strongest bones in the body,"
Michel said, "and the mother couldn't explain at all how it happened."
Michel says not only did Borst have no explanation, but it also
became clear that the little girl had been hurt a couple days earlier
and that her mother had waited before getting her medical treatment.
"Two days is a long time for a child to have a broken bone with no
attention," Michel said. "It's very disturbing."
Borst's
neighbors say they are still disturbed and just hope Borst's children
are now in a safe foster home.
"It's a privilege to be a
parent," Boop said. "You shouldn't abuse your children or take advantage
of your children. It's not right."
Borst is being held in Ontario
County Jail on $5,000 bail. Police say if and when she is bailed out,
they will issue a protective order to make sure she stays away from her
children.
