The father of a 3-month-old girl was arrested Sunday in connection with her
Friday death, officials with the Tucson Police Department said.
On Friday night, paramedics found Tayma Ramos in respiratory arrest at a home
in the 200 block of East Fort Lowell Road, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, spokeswoman
for the Tucson Police Department.
The girl died later that evening of injuries that her father, Manuel
Ramos-Garate, is suspected of inflicting, Lopez said.
Ramos-Garate was being held in the Pima County jail on one count each of
child abuse and first-degree murder, Lopez said.
She would provide no further information on the nature of the injuries or the
arrest.
Two neighbors said they had trouble believing Ramos-Garate had harmed his
daughter.
"As far as I know, there's no one he loved more than his daughter," said
Duane Phillips, 27, who often barbecued with Ramos-Garate.
Tierra Arnold, another neighbor, agreed.
"We saw him pretty often, and he seemed like a really good father," she
said.
Both Arnold and Phillips heard the arrival of the paramedics Friday night and
said Ramos-Garate told officials that Tayma had choked on milk.
The girl's mother declined to comment Sunday. Ramos-Garate was being held
without bond.

Three-month-old Tayma Ramos died on March 20 as a result of injuries she allegedly received from her father, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Tayma’s dad, Manuel Ramos-Garate, 25, was booked into Pima County Jail on one count of first-degree murder and one count of child abuse.

Paramedics responded to a 9 p.m. call on March 19 of a child needing medical assistance in the 200 block of East Fort Lowell Road, east of North Stone Avenue.

They found Tayma in respiratory arrest and immediately took her to University Medical Center where she was admitted in critical condition.

Ramos-Garate was initially arrested on the charge of child abuse after police determined he caused the baby’s injuries. The charge of first-degree murder was added when Tayma died the following day.

Tucson man facing prison in child death case

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson man faces between 10 and 37 years in prison after admitting he killed his infant daughter, and that he hurt a woman in an unrelated drunk driving crash.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/mYP1IH ) reports 26-year-old Manuel Ramos-Garate pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor driving under the influence and second-degree murder.

He is facing between 10 to 22 years in prison for the death of his daughter, Tayma Ramos, in March 2010, and between five and 15 years in prison for a DUI-related crash that took place 11 months earlier.

Court documents indicate Ramos-Garate told police he shook the girl because he was upset and hungry, and the baby was crying.

The Pima County judge handling the case can run the sentences concurrently or consecutively.

Ramos-Garate is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 7.

Tucson man gets 17½ years in killing of infant daughter

TUCSON — A Tucson man has been sentenced to 17½ years in prison for killing his 2-month-old daughter and severely injuring a woman in an unrelated crash.

Pima County prosecutors say 26-year-old Manuel Ramos-Garate pleaded guilty last month to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor driving under the influence and second-degree murder.

Authorities say Tayma Ramos died from blunt force trauma to her head in March 2010 although Ramos-Garate claimed he merely “mishandled” the baby.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/uLY6ry) says Ramos-Garate’s vehicle was travelling 68 mph in a 40-mph zone when he ran a red light and hit another car in April 2009.

Authorities say Ramos-Garate had marijuana and alcohol in his system. The crash left a woman in the other car with a broken jaw and some broken ribs.

17 years for two felony crimes including killing a baby. He should have gotten life. Another misjustice for the life of an innocent baby.
