judge convicted and sentenced an Avondale man Tuesday who fatally beat his son
last year.
Tyler Coggins Sr. was tried by Judge John "Skip" West, who convicted the
20-year-old on murder and felonious assault charges.



He was immediately sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
Coggins admitted to his girlfriend, Nadia Alexander, in a recorded phone
call that he had struck his 4-week-old son, Terrell Coggins, once in the head
out of frustration.
However, a medical examiner testified that the child's injuries showed he
had been struck multiple times.
Alexander testified that Coggins did not want a second child so soon
after their first had been born less than a year earlier.
