Young Father Charged With Murdering Newborn Infant
By Steven Tanner on March 26, 2010 9:02 AM
Three-week-old baby girl Liliana Galvez never had a chance. Cicero paramedics found her lifeless body at her father's home and originally thought she had died of sudden infant death syndrome, according to an article in the Chicago Tribune.
Now her father, 19-year-old Jorge Galvez, stands accused of murder.
Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Colin Simpson claims that Mr. Galvez accidentally dropped Liliana; after which she was crying and responsive. But then he called the baby's mother (who was not named by reporters) and for whatever reason Mr. Galvez allegedly threw the baby in her crib.
Liliana became unresponsive at that point; after which her mother told Mr. Galvez to immediately call police. But Mr. Simpson said that he went to sleep instead for "at least six hours." When he finally awoke, Liliana still was unresponsive so he attempted chest compressions to try to revive her.
But it was too late.
The results of an autopsy conclude that Liliana died from blunt head trauma, most likely a result of being thrown at the crib. The medical examiner's office ruled it a homicide and Mr. Galvez was charged with first-degree murder for his daughter's demise.
Mr. Galvez's Chicago criminal defense attorney, assistant public defender Parle Roe-Taylor, argues that Liliana's death may have been an accident:
"[Galvez] is very distraught. This is very difficult for him and his family."
The Illinois Dept. of Children and Family Services told reporters it had not had any contact with the family prior to the incident. Liliana was the couple's only child.

Sheriff: Man held in child's slaying wanted 3 witnesses killed
July 15, 2010 5:31 PM
A reputed Cicero gang member awaiting trial in the slaying of his infant daughter was charged today with trying to have three in-laws killed so they couldn't testify against him.
Jorge Galvez, 20, was being held at the Cook County Jail in the March slaying of his 3-week-old daughter when investigators from the Cook County sheriff's criminal intelligence unit - which monitors gang activities at the jail - learned he was looking for a hit man, the sheriff's office said.
Galvez allegedly told an undercover officer posing as a hit man that he would pay him with drugs and money once the killings were carried out. He suggested the officer simply "run up and blast them," the sheriff said.
Galvez, a reputed member of the Latin Kings street gang, has been held without bail since March on charges of murdering of his daughter. He allegedly threw her at her crib when she would not stop crying.
