Investigators say there are signs of abuse on the body of a toddler who died,
after her mother said she fell out of bed.
Investigators believe a baby girl died inside a Corona, Queens apartment, and
they do not think it was an accident.
Friday night, the medical examiner confirmed that the death was indeed a homicide.
"The injuries to the baby are inconsistent with that type of event so
obviously we're investigating," said NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
The mother of 19-month-old Anniyah Levant told doctors her daughter fell from a bunkbed.

She took the unconscious child to Mt. Sinai Hospital Tuesday afternoon.
But, investigators say her little body had signs of child abuse, not a fall.
Sources say Anniyah had a broken jaw, a collapsed lung, and bruises on her face.
"I've never seen anything out of the ordinary. I wish I would have so I could
have alerted someone before this ever happened," said Sylvia Lopez, a neighbor.
The little girl's death happened in close quarters making it really hard for
neighbors who are used to seeing the little girl come and go everyday.
"I feel so bad for the baby, so bad. She was just a little girl. I don't know
what was the reason for all of this," said Lopez.
The mother and boyfriend were interviewed at the 110th precinct on Friday.
The medical examiner ruled that the little girl died of "blunt impact
injuries of the head and torso with fractures and internal injuries."

* In Queens, Allen Shannon, 27, was charged over the weekend in the brutal death of 19-month-old Anniyah Levant, who'd been mercilessly beaten over her head and body.

The baby, who lived with her mom on 103rd Street in Corona, was found unconscious Thursday and pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens.

The Queens man arrested for killing his girlfriend's 19-month-old daughter admitted he punched the child's mother - causing her to drop the toddler to the floor, law enforcement officials revealed Saturday.

Anniyah Levant fell Wednesday at her mother's apartment in Corona. She suffered a broken jaw, a lacerated liver and spleen and massive internal injuries, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Allen Shannon, 27, hung his head as he was led from the 110th Precinct in handcuffs Saturday. He was held without bail on second-degree murder charges Saturday night at his arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

Prosecutors allege Shannon asked a female friend to claim he spent Tuesday and Wednesday with her.

When the friend asked why, Shannon admitted he hit his girlfriend, 22-year-old Candice Jones, causing her to drop Anniyah, Brown said.

"His alleged actions are incomprehensible and should result in him spending the rest of his life in prison," Brown said.

Jones initially denied that Shannon hit her or that she dropped her daughter, instead claiming the toddler had fallen off a bunk bed, officials said. It was not clear if she would face criminal charges.

Man gets 25 to life for killing toddler: Brown

CORONA — A Brooklyn man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison last week for killing his girlfriend’s toddler daughter in her 103rd Street apartment, the Queens district attorney said.

Allen Shannon, 31, received the sentence after being convicted of second-degree murder last month before Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise, District Attorney Richard Brown said.

The DA said that, according to the testimony, 22-year-old Candice Jones left her 19-month-old daughter, Anniyah Levant, with Shannon as she left for work the night of March 23, 2010.

The next morning, Shannon called her and said the baby did not look well, and when Jones returned to her apartment on 103rd Street she found the baby and took her to Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan where the toddler died as a result of blunt impact injuries to the head and torso, Brown said.

The medical examiner determined Anniyah had suffered brain injury, a broken jaw, broken ribs, a lacerated liver and spleen, bruising on her face and internal abdomen bleeding, the DA said
