Galesburg infant who died was unsupervised for four hours:
Mother
says father was laying down in another room

GALESBURG — The last
time Stacey Loser saw her infant daughter
alive, Hailee was smiling while she sat in a baby swing in the
living room.
“She was the happiest baby,” said Loser, who
left her Galesburg mobile home around 7:30 a.m. for a doctor’s
appointment
last Tuesday.
But about four hours later, when Loser returned,
Hailee was cold.Arthur Williams, Hailee’s father and Loser’s fiancé, had
been laying down in a bedroom and never noticed anything was wrong.“He
figured she was still sleeping,” Loser, 29, said. Police have said the 2
1/2-month-old appeared to have been positioned in the swing in a way
that she could not breathe, a condition known as positional
asphyxia.Authorities said they believe her death was an accident but the
investigation is ongoing. An autopsy conducted last week could not
determine the cause of death and toxicology results are pending.
In a
petition filed Wednesday in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Family
Division, a caseworker for the Michigan Department of Human Services
wrote that Hailee had been left unattended for four hours.
The
death “appears to have been caused by an unsafe sleeping arrangement
that blocked the child’s airway,” caseworker Sarah Font wrote in the
petition seeking to remove the other three children from the home.
DHS
was already familiar with the family.According to the petition, when
Hailee was born in late January she tested positive for
tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
During
a site visit in February, “the home of the parents and minor children
was found to be unsanitary and unsafe for the minor children,” the
petition said.
In March, the family completed DHS’ Families First
initiative, a short-term crisis program that offers intensive
educational services.
After Hailee died, “the family home was found
again to be in an unsanitary state, with feces, used insulin needles,
beer cans, cigarette butts, and prescription medication bottles on the
floor within reach of the minors,” the petition said.
Also,
“marijuana remnants” were found in an ashtray in the living room, the
document said.
Three other children in the home — girls ages 2 and 5,
and a 7-year-old boy — were placed into DHS’s care. The agency said in
its
court filing that it would attempt to reunite the children with the
parents.
Loser disagreed with DHS’ contention that Hailee had been
left “unattended,” noting that Williams was not far
away.
“He didn’t
check on her. But who really wants to wake up a sleeping baby?” Loser
said. “Mom just left a couple of hours ago, and
she was fine.”
Loser
also denied that her home was in the condition described by DHS.
“We
have all these allegations on us.It’s not us,” she said. “My house,
it’s not miraculous, but my house is lived-in.”
Loser said her family
was thrown into the media spotlightand has been treated unfairly by
DHS.
“We didn’t really have timeto grieve ... We’re thrown into court
and my kids were taken away. How fair is that?” she said.

KALAMAZOO
(WKZO) -- County Detectives now suspect an infant found
dead in a
baby swing near Galesburg may have died from something called
“positional
Asphyxia’ but it will take more lab tests to confirm it.
Undersheriff
Paul Matyas says it’s caused by the child being placed in a
position in which it cannot breathe and cannot move to catch its
breath.
Two
and a half month old Hailee Williams was found unresponsive in
the
swing at a home on Greenfield Dr. in Gale Valley Estates in
Galesburg
late Tuesday morning. There were no other preexisting
conditions
and an autopsy revealed no physical trauma. For now it’s
being
treated as a terrible and tragic accident.
