"Baby John" VYSNIAUSKAS - 16 months - Southfield (NW of Detroit) MI
Southfield MI ---- A 16-month-old baby boy, left home alone for some 24
hours, was rescued by Southfield police officers after they learned the
child’s parents were in jail following an arrest in Sterling Heights.
The baby was found at 10 p.m. April 21, lying on a bed
with a soiled diaper, a piece of fruit next to him. He was asleep when
officers arrived.
“There was an apple next to the baby that had nibble
marks on it like he was trying to eat the apple,” said Lt. Nick Loussia
of the Southfield Police Department.
It was determined that the boy had been left alone for
approximately 24 hours, police said.
Officers were alerted to the situation when a call came
into the department from two individuals who stated that a child may be
home alone at an apartment in the 26000 block of West 12 Mile, and that
the parents were possibly incarcerated. But the callers weren’t sure
which apartment the baby was in.
An investigation ensued, and officers were able to
determine the child’s location and rescue the baby. Paramedics were
called to the scene. The baby was evaluated and taken to Beaumont
Hospital, where it was determined that he did not suffer any lasting
health effects as a result of the incident.
Children’s Protective Services were called out, and the
baby was turned over to their custody.
Meanwhile, the child’s parents, Danius Vysniauskas, 38,
and Tatsiana Leichanka, 26, were in jail.
Sterling Heights police nabbed the pair April 20 as they
allegedly tried to open an account using fraudulent identification at
the Chase Bank on Metropolitan Parkway, near Mound.
Vysniauskas and Leichanka, who told police they were from
Wixom, allegedly said nothing to arresting officers about the child
left home alone in Southfield.
They were arraigned in 41-A District Court April 21 on
one count each of possession of a fraudulent financial transaction
device, a four-year felony, and possession of a counterfeit state ID
card, a five-year felony.
Leichanka also is facing an additional count of using a
computer to commit a crime, a seven-year felony.
According to Sterling Heights police, the couple’s
alleged activities at the Chase branch, as well as items discovered in
their possession and in their car, prompted the charges.
Lt. Luke Riley, public information officer for the
Sterling Heights Police Department, could not be immediately reached for
comment or to elaborate on the evidence found.
Vysniauskas’ bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety;
Leichanka’s at $20,000 cash or surety. Their preliminary exams are set
for May 3 before Judge Stephen Sierawski in 41-A District Court.
