"Baby John" BARFIELD - 5 months - Casselberry FL
CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- A Casselberry
father is accused of leaving his 5-month old baby in a bath tub filled
with scalding water. That child is now recovering from serious burns at
Arnold Palmer Hospital.Orlando Police assisted Casselberry
police and arrested the boy's father, 21- year-old Lyndon Barfield, at
the hospital while he was visiting the child. Now he's sitting in the
Orange County Jail waiting to be transported to Seminole County to face
child neglect charges.Casselberry police investigators are
trying to figure out exactly how a 5-month-old baby boy suffered third
degree burns in his apartment. Because of the law, the agency won't confirm that Barfield is the
child's father.Butch Wilson, who lives in the same apartment complex off State Road 436,
was upset to hear the news about the baby.“Normal people don't burn their child with hot water," he said.Police
say Barfield told them he left the infant in the bathtub. He went to
answer the telephone and, when he came back, the 5-month-old had been
burned.“What could a baby do wrong that you would scald it with hot water? Cry? Come on,” Wilson said.Eyewitness
News has also learned, just three weeks ago, Barfield claimed a pillow
fell on the baby's face causing him to stop breathing. Police say
Barfield told them he gave the infant CPR for a half hour before
calling 911. When paramedics arrived, the child was awake but having
trouble breathing. Both times the baby was hurt his mother was not home.
Wilson believes both cases are suspicious.“I hope that the child lives,
I hope that the child's okay," he said. The baby is expected to be okay,
but he suffered severe burns.Casselberry
police say foul play was not suspected in that first incident, but
Seminole County's Child Protective Services is still investigating.
