KYIRSTA LYNCH - 8 months -(2010) Anchorage AK
Anchorage AK ---- Investigators citing autopsy results and
evidence from the scene of a double homicide
Monday say a soldier found injured is responsible for the shooting
deaths of his 19-year-old wife and 8-month-old daughter.
Spc. Kip Lynch is still listed in critical condition at a local
hospital after sustaining what the Anchorage Police Department now says
were self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Lynch, a military policeman
stationed at Fort Richardson, returned home from Afghanistan with the
4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team in February.
Homicide investigators are still trying to determine why Lynch might
have shot his wife and child, police spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker said.
"The detectives are continuing that investigation, and it's important
we do a thorough, complete investigation," Parker said. "The
preliminary findings, they felt strong enough that they could release
those. But the investigation will continue until we are absolutely sure
we have the events right, and the people responsible for those events
correct."
"Ultimately any time there is a death of a person by violent means
whether that be suicide or homicide, there are a rash of victims to that
event: family members, friends, people who are associates with that
individual. It just leaves a hole in society and the pain that is felt
is widespread," Parker said.
Police also said they have so far not been able to determine how long
the bodies were in the home before they were discovered.
A landlord and two military police officers, looking for Lynch on
Monday after he failed to report for duty, found the bodies of his wife
Racquell, who went by Kellie, and their daughter Kyirsta at about 7 a.m.
Monday in a South Anchorage apartment. Anchorage Police found Kip Lynch
injured when they arrived.
"Members of his unit attempted to contact him through the weekend and
were unable to do so," Parker said. "So when he didn't show up Monday
morning, it was actually members of his unit that went down and knocked
on his door."
Detectives have so far not been able to interview Lynch. The Lynch
family issued a
statement earlier Tuesday expressing shock and sadness.

Alaska jury convicts soldier Kip Lynch of killing wife, baby daughter
(CBS/KTVA/AP) ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A military police officer was convicted Wednesday of killing his wife and baby two months after he returned from a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan.

Spc. Kip Lynch, 22, was convicted of murdering his 19-year-old wife, Raquell, and his 8-month-old daughter, Kyirsta, in April 2010 at the family's off-base apartment in Anchorage.
According to CBS affiliate KTVA, prosecutors said after killing the two, Lynch shot himself in the head in a failed suicide attempt.
Soldiers from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson found Lynch and the two bodies three days later when he didn't report for duty.
The jury found that Lynch intended to kill his wife, but not his daughter. KTVA reports that jurors found him guilty of first-degree murder in his wife's death, and guilty to two-counts of second-degree murder in both his wife and daughter's deaths.
During the trial, the defense maintained someone else shot all three members of the Lynch family. However, the prosecution countered that the weapon belonged to Lynch, and the head wound he sustained indicated it was a suicide attempt.
Lynch, who met his wife in high school, was a military police officer from Jacksonville, Fla. He enlisted in the Army in Sept. 2007 and went to boot camp at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He was assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. His unit served near the Pakistan border. Raquell Lynch moved to Anchorage in February 2010 to rejoin her husband when he returned from Afghanistan.

Soldier found guilty of murdering wife and baby
Jury found Kip Lynch likely didn't intend to kill his daughter.

Lynch appeared to get teary just after Superior Court Judge Michael Spaan read the verdict. Olson noted that Lynch's sentencing is set for Sept. 23 and the young man looked pale as court officers led him from the courtroom.
One woman in the gallery took a close look at him. "He's just a kid," she murmured.
