say a 2 year-old girl was taken to a local health clinic late yesterday
afternoon because of a swollen stomach. The clinic immediately had the
child transported to Tampa General Hospital. After examining the
child, the emergency room doctor notified child protective services of a
possible case of child abuse. Doctors say the child had a
severed pancreas caused by blunt trauma to the abdomen, two rib
fractures, a burn mark in the shape of a fork on her right knee, bite
marks on her
buttocks and thigh and several scratches on her neck.
The little girl underwent surgery and is now in critical condition in
the ICU.Police have charged 26-year-old Isidro Rosario with child
neglect and 22-year-old Carolina Pena with aggravated child abuse and
child neglect.

Here's a little more detail:

TAMPA - A 2-year-old girl is in critical condition today after suffering abuse that left her with a severed pancreas, broken ribs and burn and bite marks, police said.
Two people were arrested late Friday: Carolina Pena, 22, the girl's mother, is being held on charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect; and Isidro Rosario, 26, the man with whom Pena is living, is being held on a child neglect charge.
Police said the toddler was taken to the Genesis health clinic Friday afternoon for treatment of a swollen belly. She was immediately transferred to Tampa General Hospital, where an emergency room physician notified investigators of possible child abuse.
A blow to the abdomen had severed the girl's pancreas, and she had two fractured ribs, police said. There was a fork-shaped burn mark on her right knee, bite marks on her buttocks and thigh, scratches on her neck and bruises.
According to arrest affidavits and jail records, Rosario said the toddler was left in his mother's car while he went to work as a welder at a shipyard.
He said that on April 30, he saw that the child had a busted lip, and that Pena told him the girl fell from a play set, affidavits say. Before then, he told investigators, he saw a burn mark on the girl's knee.
Then, on Monday of this past week, he said, he noticed the girl's belly was noticeably distended. Then, on Tuesday or Wednesday, he saw several bite marks, the affidavits say.
Doctors determined the girl's ribs were fractured at least two weeks ago, the affidavits say. The child underwent surgery at TGH, where she is in intensive care.
Forensic analysts are expected to examine the bite marks.
Rosario and Penalive at the Meridian Pointe apartment complex at 2450 E. Hillsborough Ave.
Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said two other children also were living in the apartment.
Both Pena and Rosario are charged with child neglect because they didn't seek immediate treatment for the toddler, Davis said. Pena also faces an aggravated child abuse charge because it was established the toddler was in her care at the time the injuries were inflicted.
Pena would not give an explanation as to how her daughter was injured, Davis said.
Rosario and Pena remain in jail; bail has not been set.
Neighbors at Meridian Pointe said they don't know Rosario and Pena very well because the couple moved in just a couple of weeks ago
