A 12-year-old girl who had been missing since May 5,
was found alive Wednesday. A Cleveland park worker has been arrested,
accused of raping her.
The girl's mother says she is thankful that her daughter is
back home.
"My child is alive, my child is safe, my child is okay.
So...heart-pounding, but relief that she's alive and okay," the girl's
mother said, after learning her daughter was found alive.
The mother went on to applaud the help from many.
"The community really stepped up, social networking, Twitter, Facebook,
just passing out fliers, whatever, everyone stepped up, people I didn't
know, so the community really stepped up to get involved," the mother
said.
At around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, Cleveland police arrested 23-year-old
Michael A. Hudson at this home on Edna Avenue in Cleveland.
Police say they received word that he had been having a relationship
with the girl, and she had been staying with him.
Police say while they were questioning him, the girl called Hudson. A
short time later, they found her near the Garden Valley Estates near
East 79th Street and Kinsman Avenue.
"I ain't never seen the girl," said a man who runs the rooming house
where Hudson was staying. He did not want to be identified.
"He was a young man, he needed a place to stay and he rented a room, he
went to work every week, he paid his rent, we never really noticed him
going in and out...he didn't have a lot of company or nothing, a nice
guy working a job, it was shocking to us that he was implicated in
this," he said.
Hudson was a seasonal worker at the Cleveland-owned Highland Park Golf
Course in Highland Hills. City of Cleveland spokeswoman Andrea Taylor
says he was employed by a temp agency that the city contracted to do
landscaping at city parks.
She says he has worked for the past three summers, but hadn't been to
work for the past month after an accident with a golf cart.
"I just want to say thank you to the community members, to law
enforcement, for ensuring (my daughter's) safe return, all the prayers
were greatly appreciated," the girl's mother said.
Cleveland police have not said how Hudson and the girl may have known
each other. After police found the girl around 3:00 a.m., she was
treated at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, and released.
Michael Hudson has not been charged. He's being held in the Cleveland
city jail.
