Bizarre Kidnap/Murder Plot - GABRIELA OSORIO / Suspect - Santa Ana CA
Santa Ana CA ---- A Santa Ana woman is behind bars, accused of trying to
kidnap a newborn baby girl and stabbing the baby's mother, authorities
said.
Gabriela Osorio, 28, has been charged with attempted murder with
sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder, inflicting
great bodily harm and use of a deadly weapon. She also faces three
felony counts of child abuse and endangerment, first degree burglary and
two counts of making criminal threats, according to the criminal
complaint.
Osorio is expected to be arraigned on June 25. She is being held at
the Orange County Jail.
"It's sad," Senior Deputy District Attorney Alison Gyves said. "It's
not our normal case but we'll have to see how this pans out with the
investigation."
Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said the plot began in 2009
when Osorio believed she was pregnant and her live-in boyfriend and
family were happy about it. Osorio soon found out she was not pregnant
but didn't tell her loved ones, he said.
In March, Osorio told her family she'd given birth but the baby girl
had to stay in the hospital due to a medical problem, Bertagna said.
"I think (Osorio) got wrapped up in her lie, which grew like a
cancer, and didn't know how to get out of it."
Earlier this month, Osorio befriended a 26-year-old mother at
Paramount Care Medical Group in Santa Ana, Bertagna said. That led to
Friday's bizarre conclusion when Osorio showed up uninvited at the
woman's home in the 2000 block of North Fairview St. with the apparent
intention to take her week-old baby, Bertagna said.
"After four hours, she wasn't given the opportunity to take the baby
and run so she took it to the next level," Bertagna said.
Osorio allegedly asked the mom for a plastic bag and tried to
suffocate her with it, Bertagna said. Osorio then tried to suffocate her
with a pillow before grabbing a knife and stabbing her three or four
times in the upper body, he said, adding that it was unclear if the
knife was in the house or if she brought it.
During the struggle, the victim managed to bite the tip off Osorio's
right ring finger and escape. The victim ran outside without the baby
and asked her brothers and a neighbor for help, Bertagna said.
The victim's brothers confronted Osorio, who was holding the baby and
a knife, Bertagna said, adding that she threatened to kill the baby.
Police arrived and Osorio gave up the baby.
"I think all of the parties involved are grateful that the injuries
were not more severe," Gyves said.
The baby was not hurt and the mother was treated for stab wounds and
released from a hospital.
Osorio has two children.
