Farmington UT ---- A 6-year-old boy who was missing for nearly 12 hours
was found unharmed Tuesday morning.
An Amber Alert was issued just after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday for DeAngelo
Valerio.
The boy was found just after 9 a.m. at a home in West Valley City,
and the alert was canceled.
Davis County Sheriff's Lt. Brad Wilcox said the boy was located at
the home, where he had spent the night with Yvette Newton.
Newton, 39, fled from the home on foot, Wilcox said, and police are
still trying to find her to question her about the events that unfolded
overnight.
"We're still attempting to gather all the players, everyone who was
involved, and get statements and sort things out," he said.
DeAngelo was reunited with his mother at the South Salt Lake police
station shortly after he was found. He was uninjured and in good
health.
At a news conference Tuesday morning, Wilcox said the case was
"extremely convoluted" and complicated.
He said a car was stopped by police just after 9 p.m. Monday near
Park Lane off Interstate 15 in Farmington.
The driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old male, was arrested for
carrying a gun and having drugs on his person, Wilcox said.
Newton, DeAngelo and his mother Kelly Valerio came in a second car to
pick up the first car after the 16-year-old's arrest.
Once they arrived, police discovered there were several outstanding
arrest warrants for DeAngelo's mother.
She was taken into custody and booked into Davis County Jail.
Later, Newton took DeAngelo with her in a white 1996 Infiniti
four-door sedan that was supposed to be headed to South Salt Lake.
Wilcox said DeAngelo was supposed to be dropped off at his
grandmother's home, but never arrived.
Officers believe he was taken to the home in West Valley
City instead, where he stayed overnight.
Wilcox said Newton and DeAngelo's mother were acquaintances.
"There might have been a friendship, we just don't know," he said.
"We are only assuming they are acquaintances. Their friendship had
been short in time length."
An Amber Alert was issued around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Wilcox said it took police awhile to decide to issue the alert
because they weren't sure if the child was in danger or if there had
been a simple miscommunication.
DeAngelo's mother posted bail at Davis County Jail on Monday night,
Wilcox said, but once she returned home, she went to sleep, though she
knew that her son was missing.
Wilcox said detectives are still investigating the case, and are
trying to find Newton and figure out what happened overnight.
"We'd still like to find out what happened between this period of
time (Monday night) and the time we found the boy, so that we can close
this case and put some resolution to it," he said.
