"Newborn John Doe" - 6 Days - Howell (N of Ann Arbor) MI
A Fowlerville man is accused of child abuse after his girlfriend found
signs of trauma on her then-6-day-old baby's head.
Prosecutors have charged Steven Lee Jones, 27, with first-degree
child abuse for allegedly injuring his girlfriend's son at a home in the
300 block of Lake Street in Howell.Chief George Basar of the Howell Police Department
said the baby's mother arrived home May 21 to find her son unresponsive
and something wrong with his eyes, which "didn't look right."She took the baby to
Saint Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital in Howell. The child was then
transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor
when doctors found trauma on the boy's head that resembled shaken baby
syndrome."There
are some unique injuries that are puzzling, but the general symptoms are
consistent with shaken baby syndrome," Basar said, declining to
elaborate on what was unique about the injuries. The baby has since been released to foster care, the
chief said.Basar
said Jones "offered an explanation as to how the baby may have been
injured," but he declined to share details. Basar did note, however,
that Jones "made no admissions he shook the baby."Jones, who is being held in the Livingston County
Jail on a $150,000 bond, will return to Livingston County District Court
on Wednesday for an exam conference.

The case against a Fowlerville man accused of child abuse is on hold
while he undergoes state testing.
27-year-old Steven Lee Jones is
charged with first degree child abuse for allegedly hurting his
girlfriend’s 6-day-old baby boy. At a hearing today, he was referred to
the state Forensic Center for a competency review. A review hearing is
scheduled for November 5th. The alleged incident took place on May 21st
at a home on Lake Street in Howell. Howell Police say the baby’s mother
came home to find her infant son unresponsive and said that something
didn’t look right with the baby’s eyes. Police say she took the baby to
St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital in Howell, where he was then
transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
Doctors there say they found trauma on the baby’s head consistent with
shaken baby syndrome. The baby has been released to foster care.
