DANNILYN LOPEZ- 3 Weeks - San Antonio TX
Police are investigating the death of an infant who may have been
accidentally smothered by its mother at a West Side apartment complex
Saturday. Police responded to the Castleridge Apartments in the
8000 block of West Military Drive around 1:30 p.m. Saturday after
construction workers changing windows at the complex entered a residence
and discovered an infant's body underneath its incapacitated mother.
“We were tapping on the mother's shoulder to try and wake her up,
but she was moaning and couldn't really wake up,” a shaken construction
worker who asked not to be identified said. “The baby was already dead.”
The woman, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to a local
hospital, police said. Police said the woman was “incoherent” when she
was found. “We are waiting for the medical examiner's office to
make a determination about the cause of death for the child,” San
Antonio Police Department spokesman Mathew Porter said. “If the mother
played a contributing factor into the infant's death, there's a
possibility she could face charges.” Neighbors described the
mother as a friendly woman in her late 20s with three other children.
They said she was well-known in the complex and had given birth to her
latest child, a baby girl, only weeks before. “She's a real good
mom,” said Terry Gonzalez, 40, a friend who lives in the complex,
adding that she'd never seen the woman intoxicated. “She'd even watch my
boys if I asked her. I trust her.”

A mother could face charges in connection with her infant's death after
San Antonio police found what appeared to be narcotics in the bedroom
where the baby was found dead Saturday. Dannilyn Lopez was less
than 3 weeks old when workers changing windows at the Castleridge
Apartments in the 8000 block of West Military Drive found her lifeless
body beneath her mother's arm around 1:30 p.m., according to the Bexar
County medical examiner's office and San Antonio police. An
emotional worker said they tapped on the mother's shoulder to try to
wake her up, but she was moaning and incapacitated, officials said.
An incident report states she “was very unresponsive and she seemed
to be under the influence.” Police found two small baggies possibly
containing narcotics and two credit cards with white powder on them in
the bedroom. The infant's mother was taken to University
Hospital, police said. Her name and age have not been released. The
medical examiner's office hadn't determined early Sunday the cause or
manner of Dannilyn's death. Neighbors described the infant's mother as a
friendly woman in her late 20s with three other children. Mary
Walker, spokeswoman for Child Protective Services, said caseworkers are
investigating the death, but she didn't have any information on the
family's history Sunday afternoon.

Mother previously faced drug suspicions

A mother whose newborn baby was found dead under her arm had been investigated three times on complaints of drug abuse but Child Protective Services caseworkers were unable to determine wrongdoing, an agency spokeswoman said Monday.
The mother, who has not been charged with any crime, is under investigation in connection with the death of her daughter, who was less than three weeks old, after San Antonio police found what appeared to be narcotics in her bedroom.
Construction workers at the Castleridge Apartments in the 8000 block of West Military Drive found Dannilyn Lopez dead and her mother incapacitated and possibly intoxicated, according to a police report. The medical examiner's office has not determined the cause of death.
All three anonymous complaints about the woman since December 2008 included allegations of drug abuse, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Mary Walker said, but they were dismissed after drug test results came back negative. The mother was again tested, along with the baby, when Dannilyn was born June 21. Both tests were negative, Walker said.
The woman had three other children who were out of town for the summer with their father, Walker said.
