Spokane Valley WA ---- A SWAT team searching for a man wanted in an
early Sunday morning attack that left a woman dead and her 9-year-old
son on life support found the body of a man at the suspect's eastern
Washington home, authorities said.Detectives couldn't immediately
confirm the dead man's identity, but they believe the body found at
about 5 p.m. belonged to the suspect, 39-year-old Jan R. Demeerleer. It
appeared that the man had died from a gunshot wound, a Spokane Valley
police statement said.Earlier Sunday, police warned that
Demeerleer could be headed to Idaho. The attack happened at the
woman's home at around 3 a.m. Sunday, police Sgt. Dave Reagan said.
Officers arrived at the home to find the woman dead and two boys — ages 9
and 17 — hurt. The 17-year-old boy told police he awoke to a man
slashing his neck with a knife. The teen called 911, telling the
dispatcher "his stepdad had attempted to cut his throat and had killed
his mom," Reagan said.Reagan said the 9-year-old boy suffered a
severe head injury. Both boys were taken to a Spokane hospital. Police
said the 9-year-old has a twin brother, who was uninjured.Detectives
believe the woman died of a gunshot wound, the police statement said. The
woman had been living with Demeerleer at some point and they were
engaged to be married, Reagan said. There had been some kind of dispute
between the couple involving the children, he said. The two
9-year-old boys were the woman's and Demeerleer had a 17-year-old
daughter who was out of town Sunday, according to Reagan. He said the
17-year-old boy called Demeerleer his stepdad.

SPOKANE VALLEY -- Relatives of 36-year-old Rebecca Schiering called a news conference Monday to mourn the deaths of Schiering and her young son, Phillip Schiering. The Spokane County sheriff's office says both were shot early Sunday in an attack at the woman's home.
Investigators say the boy was shot in the head by Jan R. Demeerleer, 39, his soon-to-be stepfather, in a deadly domestic violence attack.
Police say Demeerleer also killed Phillip's mother, Rebecca, and slashed the throat of his 17-year-old brother, Brian Winkler, in the same attack early Sunday morning. After a massive search for Demeerleer, he was found later that day on the floor or his garage, dead of an apparent gunshot wound.
Police say Brian called 911 at 2:49 a.m. Sunday from 600 N. Ella in Spokane Valley. He told operators he woke up to his step-dad slashing his throat and found his mother dead in the kitchen. Investigators say when officers arrived, they learned the suspect had also shot Phillip in the head, but his 9-year old twin brother, Jack, was not hurt.
At about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Phillip was pronounced brain dead. He was taken off life support and died of his injuries Monday morning.
Employees at St. Margaret's Women's Shelter confirm Rebecca stayed in their facilities after giving birth to her twin sons, Jack and Phillip, several years ago. Employees say Jack is autistic.
After finding the crime scene, officers launched a manhunt for Demeerleer, effectively using the 911-callback program to inform Demeerleer's neighbors about his appearance, what car he might be driving, and the potential danger in their neighborhood. SWAT set up around his Northwoods home in the 8300 block of East Briant.
Detectives say Demeerleer and Schiering were engaged to be married. They had live together for a period in the Northwoods home.
Friends and family have set up a memorial fund for the Schiering family at United Health Services Credit Union. Contributions can be made at the Credit Union Service Center on 1212 W Francis. Also, contributions can be made at any credit union shared branch – just ask the credit union to call United Health Services Credit Union for the account number.

Teen Woke Up to Having Throat Slashed, Finds Mom Dead, Brother Shot
By CLEOPATRA ANDREADIS (@CleopatraJA)
July 19, 2010
The teenager woke to the searing pain of a knife slicing through his throat, and survived to find his mother shot to death.
Nevertheless, the 17-year-old in Spokane, Wash., was able to call 911, meet the police at the door, and while bleeding profusely, beg the cops not to let his two younger brothers see the body of their murdered mom.
"Don't let them see my mom," he pleaded with the officers, according to Sgt. David Reagan of the Spokane County Sheriffs office.
Despite the teen's concerns, one of his 9-year-old twin brothers was already shot in the head. The other 9-year-old, who is autistic,
survived unhurt because he decided to sleep on the couch that night instead of in his bed.
The boy who was shot in the head was put on life support at Sacred Heart Hospital, but he was taken off life support late Sunday and declared dead, police said today.
Police are not identifying the family, but have stated they were attacked by the mother's long time boyfriend Jan R. Demeerleer, whose body was found by a SWAT team later Sunday morning.
"He suffered a gunshot wound to the head as a direct result of taking his own life," said Reagan.
Demeerleer was immediately the prime suspect in the attack on the woman, his estranged fiance and her children.
"We believe [the suspect] had problems with the autistic child," said Reagan. "There were reports of domestic violence towards him which is why the relationship ended between Demeerleer and his estranged fiance."
Demeerleer allegedly forced his way into the woman's home around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, shooting her in the head before walking to the twin boys' rooms. Only one was sleeping in the room and he shot him before slitting the throat of the 17-year-old.
"The autistic child was not in his room that night," said Reagan. "For whatever reason, he decided he wanted to sleep on the couch and we believe that is why he was uninjured."
"Locating the suspect was our first priority," added Reagan. " More investigation into this case is pending."
The wounded teenager was listed in good condition.

Because, apparently, you my dear Twinkie were not there with your wonderful filing skills
This is so sad - I always wonder how the survivors are doing but seldom see follow-ups.

Just trying to clean up some old cases. This one was so easy to find I just wondered why it had not been posted before.
It's so time consuming I can only do a few at a time.
I appreciate the ones you find.
