DASHIRA MARIE SANCHEZ - 16 yo (2010) - Collingswood (E of Camden) NJ
Collingswood NJ ---- Yalexis Diaz sat quietly in her dimly
lit living room on Monday, thumbing the corners of a stack of papers
with "MISSING" printed across the top in bold, black letters.
In the front window of Diaz's Collingswood home, a portrait of her
16-year-old daughter, smiling with her black hair pulled back tight
against her scalp, faced outward toward Woodlynne Avenue.
Dashira Marie Sanchez
has been missing for just over a week, and the teen's family says they
have received several alarming calls that make them believe she is
being held against her will."Please help me," Sanchez said to an aunt, in a series
of frantic calls made Sunday night. When the aunt called back, a man picked up the phone,
laughed and said, "Don't worry -- you're not going to see her dead or
alive," the teen's cousin Emely Diaz recounted on Monday.Collingswood police say
they are taking the calls seriously but haven't concluded that the
girl is being held captive.Emely Diaz, speaking on behalf of the girl's mother,
said that Sanchez went missing on July 12. The teen boarded the bus as usual for
summer classes at Gloucester County Technical School that morning but
never attended classes or returned home that evening.Emely Diaz said Sanchez, who has a slight learning
disability, did call her mother once in the following days and briefly
said that she was on her way to New York
and that it was too late for her mother to come get her.Sanchez's family and
police believe the teen may have left with a boyfriend. Emely Diaz said
the 16-year-old had been seeing a 20-year-old man from Camden but was
prohibited from talking to him after she went missing about a month ago
and was found later that day near the man's home. Emely Diaz said the
man had told Sanchez at that time to bring along her passport and birth
certificate so the two could run away to Mexico.Collingswood Police
Chief Richard Sarlo said investigators believe the girl may be with the
boyfriend in the Buffalo, N.Y. area. Police there have been notified
that Sanchez is missing.However,
Sarlo said there are also rumors that the pair may have moved on to
somewhere around Texas."We are taking the
matter seriously and we are doing everything we can to attempt to
locate her," Sarlo said.Emely
Diaz said family members are afraid the man may try to take Sanchez
into Mexico.Family
members have displayed fliers with Sanchez's picture at businesses
near their home and around the Walter Rand Transportation
Center in Camden.On
Monday, Emely Diaz said she and the girl's mother were going out to
distribute additional fliers."We just don't know what else to do," Emely Diaz said.
"The phone calls that we have gotten, it's her asking for help. We
feel that she is being held somehow against her will."
