Fullerton CA ---- Trial is
set to begin in Orange County for a woman charged with attempted murder
and child abuse for allegedly leaving her newborn in a trash bin to die.
Opening statements are scheduled to begin Wednesday in the trial
of Shawn Kelli Sepulveda. Prosecutors say Sepulveda gave
birth to a girl in August 2008 and left her in a trash bin at her
apartment complex when the infant was just hours old. Prosecutors say
Sepulveda tried to hide the pregnancy because her husband was not the
baby's father. Sepulveda's daughter discovered the baby and
alerted apartment staff who called 911. The baby was
transported to a hospital and taken into protective custody. Prosecutors
say Sepulveda could be sentenced to life in state prison if convicted.

A woman has been found guilty in Orange County of trying to kill her newborn daughter by dumping her in a trash bin. Shawn
Kelli Sepulveda was convicted Wednesday of attempted murder and child
abuse and endangerment. Prosecutors say the 40-year-old Laguna Niguel
woman hid her pregnancy because her husband was not the infant's father.
She gave birth on Aug. 16, 2008, and promptly abandoned the
baby in the trash bin outside the family's apartment complex.
Prosecutors say her husband discovered blood in the bathroom and sent
their 11-year-old daughter to look for the baby. The infant was transported to a hospital and taken into protective custody. Sepulveda faces up to 15 years in state prison at her Sept. 24 sentencing.

An Orange County woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempting to murder her newborn daughter by leaving her in a trash bin. A judge handed down the sentence Friday for 41-year-old Shawn Sepulveda who was convicted of attempted murder and child abuse charges in July. Prosecutors say Sepulveda gave birth on Aug. 16, 2008, in the bathtub of the Laguna Niguel apartment she shared with her husband and their daughter and son. They say she hid the pregnancy because her husband was not the baby's father. Her husband discovered blood in the bathroom and sent their 11-year-old daughter to look for the baby. A prosecutor told City News Service that the baby is in good health and living with Sepulveda's father.
