Re: CATHERINE HOYOS - 15 yo - Dunwoody (N of Atlanta) GA/MX alerted
Dunwoody 15-year-old Catherine Hoyos, missing since Thursday, is back at
home, though questions remain about her 2,660-mile round-trip odyssey.
"How the hell did she pull this off?" Dunwoody Police Det. Andrew
Thompson said. He hopes to get some answers Tuesday when he meets with
the girl and her parents.
Hoyos was last seen at 7 a.m. on the grounds of Peachtree Middle
School, where she had been dropped off for track practice. Later
Thursday afternoon, she boarded a Delta flight to Mexico City.
Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliott said the airline allows minors 15 and older to fly unaccompanied.
"If they have a credit card, they can purchase a ticket," Elliott said.
Dunwoody police, with assistance from Atlanta police and customs
officials, discovered Hoyos' name on the passenger list to Mexico City
the night of her disappearance. Her parents took it from there.
"We pointed them in the right direction," said Thompson, noting that
police were restricted once Hoyos left the country. "It was easier for
them to find her than it would've been for us having to coordinate with
law enforcement in another country."
Fortunately, the girl's parents had friends and family in Mexico City
who were able to locate Hoyos within hours. On Sunday, she was put on a
flight home to Atlanta.
Thompson said it's unclear why she left and who she was visiting. Hoyos' parents could not be reached for comment.
"We want to get answers because this is something that isn't supposed to happen," Thompson told reporters.
