Suspect in Mobile Home Deaths Appears in Court

Katrina Griffin and her children Christian Griffin, 8, and Chastity Hammer, 6, were killed in the fire.
PURCELL, Oklahoma -- Shaun Michael Bosse, a suspect in a mobile home fire that killed a woman and her two children last Friday, appeared briefly before a McClain County judge in Purcell Monday morning.
The 27-year-old was booked into jail on a complaint of arson and homicide, but he has not yet been charged with any crime.
The fire near Dibble killed Katrina Griffin and her children, Christian and Chastity. Family members described Bosse as Katrina Griffin's boyfriend.
"We have provided the judge with a probable cause affidavit, and he is looking at that probable cause affidavit to the events concerning what happened for the three victims," said McClain County prosecutor John Pevehouse.
Court documents state that Katrina Griffin and her children Christian and Chasity had signs of injury on their bodies that may have not been caused by the fire. They also state that one of the female victims was found to have a large knife in her hand, and that Bosse has an apparent six inch scratch inside his right arm.
McClain County has not had a triple homicide since 1978. It happened along a stretch of I-35 in the summer of 1978 and it also involved the death of a child. McClain County Sheriff Don Hewett remembers when the Melvin Lorenz family was murdered.
"I was highway patrol at that time, and I was the second, third, or fourth on the scene. I remember we found the bodies here, and then approximately north about 300 yards, we found the young man," Sheriff Hewett said.
The Lorenz family killers were also behind the infamous Steakhouse slayings in Oklahoma City a few weeks later. Roger Dale Stafford was executed for the murders.
Freddy Hill Jr., Katrina Griffin's uncle, said execution is the right punishment for Shaun Bosse too.
"I believe that he should end of the same way, you know. That's in the bible. You take the life, you know, than you should lose yours yourself," Hill said.
A court document also said Bosse was found to have property belonging to Katrina Griffin in his possession.
During Monday's hearing, Bosse told the judge he would need a court-appointed attorney to represent him. Bosse will be back in court on Wednesday.
Bosse has been in jail before for military desertion and burglary.

McClain Co. deaths ruled homicides
By Meghan McCormick

NORMAN — The State Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the manner of death for a mother and her two children found inside a burned mobile home last week in rural McClain County is homicide.
State Medical Examiner’s Office Spokesperson Cherokee Ballard said autopsies have been completed on Katrina Griffin, 24, Christian Griffin, 8, and Chasity Hammer, 6.
Katrina Griffin died from “multiple sharp force trauma,” Ballard said. Christian Griffin suffered multiple stab wounds.
Ballard said Chasity Hammer died from “smoke inhalation and thermal injury.”
“We just finished the autopsies and the bodies are ready to be released,” Ballard said Wednesday afternoon.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating all three deaths.
Shaun Michael Bosse, 27, of Oklahoma City, remains in the McClain County Jail without bond almost a week after he was arrested on three first-degree murder complaints, according to jail records.
OSBI spokesperson Jessica Brown said Tuesday that Bosse was arrested July 23 in connection to the deaths. Griffin and her children were found dead earlier that day in the burned home on Oklahoma 39 about 10 miles west of Purcell.
McClain County court records show no charges have been filed against Bosse. However, a probable cause affidavit has been sealed at Bosse’s request, according to court records.
Court records show another hearing in Bosse’s case has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at the McClain County Courthouse.

Bosse Pleads Not Guilty In Dibble Deaths
Man Accused Of Killing Katrina Griffin, 2 Kids

UPDATED: 7:40 pm CDT August 11, 2010
PURCELL, Okla. -- A man accused of killing a woman and her two children near Dibble pleaded not guilty on Wednesday, authorities said.
Shaun Michael Bosse, 27, is accused of killing Katrina Griffin, 24, and her two children -- Christian, 8, and Chasity, 6 -- on July 23. Crews recovered their burned bodies from a mobile home that caught fire.
At Wednesday's initial court appearance for Bosse, defense lawyers asked the court to extend a gag order to all parties involved in the case to limit pre-trial publicity. Despite the objection of prosecutors, the judge continued the gag order.
Bosse's next court date is set for 9 a.m. on Oct. 26.

PURCELL, Oklahoma -- An escapee from the McClain County Jail who was jailed on charges of murdering his girlfriend and her two children was captured Sunday evening according to the sheriff's office.
U.S. marshals found Shaun Michael Bosse hiding in a brush pile near a pond with which he was said to be familiar in Blanchard. He surrendered peacefully around 7:45 p.m.

Murder Victims' Family Speaks Out After Shaun Bosse Sentenced To Death

PURCELL, Oklahoma - A three-time convicted killer is headed for death row. A McClain County Judge handed down a death sentence to Shaun Michael Bosse for killing his girlfriend and her two children.
The bodies of the family were found inside their burned out mobile home in Dibble in 2010. That's when the victims' family began their pursuit of justice, one that is finally nearing an end.
"This is all we live for is to make sure they get justice and keep their memory alive," Ginger Griffin said.
Griffin fought through the tears to explain what it's been like for her family to endure two years of trial. She says it is all for one reason.
"Our children died, they didn't get a choice. They didn't get to live a life," she said.
Haunted by the murders of her stepdaughter Katrina Griffin and two children, 8-year-old Christian and 6-year-old Chasity, Griffin says she hoped Shaun Bosse would be given a death sentence for each life taken.
"That's all he deserves," she said.
On Tuesday morning, in McClain County Courtroom, the judge delivered the jury's recommendation sentencing Bosse to death.
"The death penalty is reserved for the worst of the worst and that's what Bosse was," McClain County District Attorney Greg Mashburn said.
Mashburn convinced the jury of Bosse's guilt just two months earlier.
"I believe justice was served and even though it's a somber moment, the right thing happened today," Mashburn said.
Prosecutors put on more than a week's worth of evidence to show Bosse killed the family in Dibble in 2010 and then set their trailer on fire to hide the evidence.
During the trial, the state indicated theft was the motivation for the crime that left the victim's family grieving such a loss.
"There will never be closure cause there will always be an empty place for them but this closes this chapter at least for them," Mashburn said.
A murder, which in a sense punishes more than the killer.
"Now we have nothing to bring us joy," Ginger Griffin explained.
In addition to three death sentences, the judge also upheld the jury's recommendation for a 35-year sentence for the arson conviction. Bosse's execution date is set for February 2013.
