Ten years after a headline-grabbing adoption fight, the girl
at the center of that struggle has gone missing.Amanda
Adler, 16, has been missing since April 16, officials said. The
5-foot-1 teen, with blond hair and blue eyes, was last seen in Winter
Park, but her adoptive mother thinks she may be in Palm Beach County."She's
a beautiful little girl. I'm afraid that she could be dead," said
Rochelle Jaffe, 64, who lives in Boca Raton and adopted Adler and her
older half-sister, Sierra Adler, 18, over a decade ago. "I would want
her to know that she could come home and I miss her and I love her and
that I pray for her life." Elisa Cramer, the state Department of
Children & Families spokeswoman for Palm Beach County, issued a
news release on Tuesday seeking the public's help locating Amanda. The
circumstances of her disappearance are unclear, but she may be an
endangered runaway.Jaffe accused the state of failing to properly evaluate
Amanda psychologically and said the search effort is inactive."It's
not like watching a crime show where they actually go out and look for
her," Jaffe said, adding that she thinks Amanda may be in South Florida
to be closer to her. "They're waiting for her to make a mistake, but
that's not being active and looking for her."Cramer was unclear
about what specific efforts law enforcement officials are taking to locate Amanda.
"As I understand it, there isn't a law enforcement investigation per se," she said.
It has been over a decade since Jaffe was embroiled in an adoption fight
with Amanda's then-incarcerated father, Scott Charlton.In
1997, both Amanda and Sierra were living with Jaffe, who adopted Sierra
in October of the following year. But, Amanda's father fought Jaffe for
Amanda's custody. In January 1999, Jaffe was awarded legal custody
of Amanda after a court ruling against Charlton.Amanda
Adler has run away before, including one time to see her birth mother,
according to Jaffe. And she was living in foster care, where she had
been for the past three or four years, Jaffe said, when she ran away. "I
signed her over because she started having a lot of issues that I
couldn't deal with," Jaffe said. "[Amanda] got involved with things that
were not healthy for her … Drugs and not-healthy things."
Officials ask anyone with information about Amanda's whereabouts to call 800-843-5678.
